At the moment there is a major trade war in progress between the usa and europe, so items that at one time would get through without being stopped at customs area are now all being stopped. last year i purchased tubes of eagles and about 1-10 would be stopped. mnow everyone is being stopped and guys i know purchasaing them as well are having the same problem. an example of this is i purchased tube of 2000 eagles for 170usd the duty on this was 70usd making the eagles cost me 240 usd which is obviously un-economical.The only saviour here is everyone is in the same position. be warned
customs just arrived again with another tube and took me for another 75 usd i have 2 more tubes on there way to me once there here thats that bastards spoiling any chance of making an investment in silver
If it were me, I would at least be lowballing the value. State the melt value, for instance, not the premium. Or, find the limits for customs fees (free below a certain value, for example), and have them shipped in pieces. Or, at least have the package hand addressed, and marked "gift". Germany is even worse than the UK for customs, but some of these tricks work. Or......consider a cheap flight to the US and buy them yourself. With two or three of these customs chanrges, you could almost afford a ticket.
i think im going to buy old silver coinage instead i believe they come in as vat free because there consider antique value. so i will fill myself a 1000 usd bag up
If you like, you can have them shipped to me, and I will ship them to you as "gifts". You pay the shipping of course. It sounds like you would save quite a bit of money. That is, if you don't buy too often. Maybe a couple of times a month.
There are things you can do and things you can't do - but trying to beat or bend the rules to get around customs charges can sometimes get you into a lot of hot water - in any country. You would be far better off to work within the laws - there's usually a way.
There's always one in every crowd. Okay, okay, so if you don't want to break the rules, then get to know them real well and find the cheapest way to abide by them. For example: if the customs people are whacking you with a high fee for "bullion", is there a way to classify the SEs you are buying as "collector coins" (assuming this designation would reduce the tax)? I generally do not suggest that people BREAK the law, but if you can work within the law, and stretch it to the limits to work in your favor, then good. I am forced to do this here in Germany where the craziest bureaucracy constantly trips up people. I had an autographed book sent to me as a gift from Charlie Daniels (not sure if the younger set knows who he is), but because it came in an envleope that had a typed address and a return address that looked like it was from a company (it was from his fanclub address), the Germans insisted that it could not be delivered as a "gift", despite the fact that it WAS a gift and it was MARKED as a gift on the customs form. After a verbal altercation the lady backed down, or should I say surrendered, but she still didn't buy into common sense - she only got tired of fighting me on it. I would imagine the Brits are slightly more reasonable. My own advice - get those packages hand-addressed, and list the contents as "collector coins" - they will be less conspicuous that way. Also, the cost of postage paid to the seller should not be included in the "value" field. And......if the customs people insist on charging you as if the coins only had bullion value, I would be inclined to only state bullion value on the customs label. Why pay tax on the premium people pay for SEs as collectors' items? Of course, the sender/seller has to agree to go along with all of this. As a last resort, I would get all your friends and the local dealers together and opt for the personal visit to the US to buy them directly. You could fly into New Hamphshire (no sales tax), have some local dealer waiting for you at the airport, then hop back on the plane. You would have to check the customs limit for people returning to the UK, of course.
well the plane idea wont work because i maybe only buy about 4 tubes at a go, so would be uneconomical, i have a friend going over to the states shortly im going to ask him to bring some back but hes woried about customs too walking or posting you still gotta pay the taxes. so the other way around it is to have it packaged smaller but time you add the costs in this would only save about half and then you might lose the odd one in the post. i have decieded i will not be buying anymore from the usa and will concentrate on buying junk silver coins in the uk. i will still buy junk dimes from the usa though they seem to get through without a problem had 10 usd face delivered today with no problems. infact if anyone can point me to a reasonable dealer for these coins i would be most intrested. regards to all
i have 300 usd of a 1000 usd bag built so far need to get one of the nice big bank bags to put it all in though once its ready that would be nice
Well, I think the personal limit if you carry them is higher, but of course you still have to get enough to pay for the ticket. But, you gave me an idea.....When I go home to the USA next I might bring a tube or two back to Germany. I have never been checked at customs yet (they only stop you if they suspect something, otherwise you just walk on by without a word), and I should pack a tube or two if there is really that big a market here in Old Europe.
most definetly you should pick up some, i would find out where sells cheapest nearest you before going however and inform them, even order and pay for pick up. this way your not hunting around and also can avoid buying retail. anyone from usa coming to uk in next month or so ?????? maybe you can bring me over couple tubes and post them when you get here making 40 bucks for yourself will pay for a few beers when you get here.
Jimmy, can you buy the Britannia silver bullion coins at a good price? Those look like a nice way to own silver bullion. It looks like you can get them in the US for about $10, so I would think you could do better in the UK.
nope rbm and if you can get em in usa at 10 usd each can i have a truckload please for some reason the premium on brittianias is huge and talking to couple of big uk dealers i know they said it dont even matter how many you seem to buy from trm the discounts for quantity are silly. i think the going rate for brittanias in uk is around 12-16 pounds depending on the bargain you get.but certainly no-where near the 5-6 pounds for a silver eagle. though less are obviously minted im not sure if they will eventually have a collector value greater than the eagles or not. i think part of the extra cost is just like i have to pay import tax and vat on siler thus so does the royal mint so this will be partly on the price. Also i dont think theyare made as a bullion coin like an eagle more of a collector item.Man they eagles are so ugly a absoulutely horrid looking ugly coin. They should realy be sold like the ugly kugger 2-5% over spot as lets be honest bullion is all there good for.
