Hello, Im looking at a ASE slabbed PCGS MS69 First Strike at my LCS. Everything looks great except on the face of the coin in the upper right side there is alittle brown about a 1/16 wide maybe 1/4 long. My LCS says its toning, Im not so sue but the sealed slab has not been tampered with that I can tell. Almost looks like a light brown tea stain, the best I can discribe. Reall want the coin but Im scared there is a problem, think it is toning? Thanks, Jim
If you see a problem about one of those just wait to find another that doesn't bother you, they are very common in that grade.
Yup, just wait for another one. ASEs are relatively easy to find in MS69 condition. And some ASEs do tone strangely.
i agree, not a rare coin so just wait until you can buy one that will leave you with no remorse.....i'm surprised your LCS doesn't have more than one laying around!
They may be slabbed but they are not air tight. The toning may have started before it was graded or after. Just because the coin is in a tpg holder doesn't mean they cant be ugly. As others have stated common coin common grade wait for a clean one.
Or buy this one so you will have one with a little character and not a clone of all of the other thousands of blast white ones out there.
I bet for the price of that MS69, you can buy 3 unslabbed/ungraded raw uncirculated ASE's and likely get three MS69's with the same amount you plan to spend on the already graded one. :thumb:
Since we're talking a 1 ounce silver bullion coin, it is reasonable to assume that the spot you mention is toning, which occurs naturally with silver. Quite possibly, the toning occurred prior to the coin being holdered by the TPG.
