Just came across this 1921 Mercury Dime with die rotation of about 150 degrees.

The coin has an unusual wear pattern on the reverse. The center appears worn but the outer portions show significant detail especially the lower portion of the fasces.

The contrast in wear is curious and makes me a bit concerned about authenticity. I will take it to a local shop at some point for a closer look. In the meantime, I'd appreciate comments

The date is all wrong. Not real.

Definitely 100% a counterfeit. Not even close.

Thanks for the comments. Any thoughts on the origins of fake 1921s? I would think if you were gonna go to the trouble of faking a '21 you'd at least slap a "D" on it. :)

This looks like one of the newer chinese pieces. One of the lower end ones.

And I don't even want to know what the crud is on there. I hope you didn't pay a whole lot for it.

Is this an eBay find? If so, we'd appreciate knowing who the seller is.

Yes, Ebay. Part of a small lot of silver coins. Glare on the holder in the photos made it hard to see. Decided to take a chance as the price was good.

The seller is working with me and is being very gracious about it thus far. Seems like an honest mistake.

Just got back from the local shop. Guy there thinks it's a sand cast knock-off, probably out of China.

Thanks again for all the comments.
