Hey all, My paypal earning limit resets next month and if I get a good amount of money from sales (coins and other stuff) I`m looking to get a start on silver American coinage. You can probably expect to me be asking for these on the want list soon I`m only looking to get one denomination done at a time but was just wondering which would be better 1916-1964 Quarters or 1916-1964 Dimes What I`m asking really is: Which in your opinion is better (looks etc) Could you give me a rough cost as to how much it would cost to complete a set (I`m not looking for uncirculated ones but more circulated, readeable and cheap).I know I could go by melt value for this, but just a quick guess will do. Or if you could suggest another denomination which would be good to collect (but easy on my pocket, I am only 15!) Thanks in advance!
I prefer dimes, specifically Mercury dimes. The Washington quarter does nothing for me. The dimes will be cheaper for the common ones. Even at melt you get 2.5 dimes per quarter. Even the Roosevelt dimes are uninteresting to me. Probably because I have seen them all my life.
Yes not a bad idea, collecting in design series more than dates makes a bit more sense thanks for your suggestion.
Honestly, buy what appeals to you, don't go by our opinions. There really is no rough cost to completing a set. It all depends on each individuals coin grade and value, which changes daily. You could easily spend thousands on either one of these sets or stay in the hundreds of dollars on low grade coins.
Buy what you enjoy looking at.. holding.. feeling... ect. If you buys coins just for the silver, and dont really enjoy owning them, you will not enjoy the purchase as much. I like Dimes... mercury dimes. Halfs & dollars are fun too.
I think that Merc Dimes would be a harder series than the Quarters. There are a few that are extremely expensive in high grade. And I'm not sure but I think Merc Dimes are a more popular series so there would be more competition. But collect what you like regardless of what others say.
I can usually find rolls of circulated mercs for about $20 above melt.... I just buy 'em that way. Last roll was about $127 with shipping.
The limit is 2500 euro its to stop people making an online business without skipping tax basically, I`m at around 2420. I`m too young to understand exactly what it is but that what I think
For now I`m thinking circulated mercury dimes without key dates, which is about $2.50 a coin, maybe $5 for some? I like silver halves but can`t really see myself buying them for now. Thanks for all your suggestions -ow
Sorry to ask again, what would be a good sight to get a melt value for silver coins like coinflation or something, if I ever put an ad up wanting silver coins. Like if I was asking for mercury dimes what sight would give a fair price for melt (for me and the seller) or even a policy that you may have maybe take the coinflation price and take off $0.10 or whatever.
Wow the standing series quarter is one of the best designs ever but the Washington quarter just looks like a big fat guy in need of Jenny Craig. The Merc is a nice coin and you can get them at close to melt for the most part. The Roosy is just an ugly coin. The dimes is by far the cheapest way to go you could finish boths sets for around 1200 or so. Man that 1916 Standing is a killer it alone is 1000's. These are just my opinion. Honestly I would go Barber - Roosy. Forget the quarter route. The 16 will crush you.
I usually use APMEX, but it is just my preference. You could just Google "silver prices" and will get literally hundreds of sights that list the current spot price.
Quarters in general are a crushing series. They are extremely hard even for a type set. I know it seems weird today since that is our defacto coinage, but they were not very popular for most of American history. I cannot think of another denomination short of gold that has such stoppers as the quarter series. The Washigton series is lucky it "only' has the 32d and s as its keys, every other quarter series has stoppers that make the 32d and s laughable. To the OP, I would suggest dimes. You can get tons of different ones for basically spot price. Heck, you can get a lot of barber dimes nowadays for the same spot silver price.
I am partial to quarters. I have an affection for Washingtons and really love the Standing Liberty, plus from a bullion/collector standpoint I think you get a decent balance between size of individual coins (the "feeler" test) and quantity. True, you get more coins with dimes for the same amount of silver cost, but I prefer the size of the quarter versus the dime from a tactile perspective.
Thanks for all your suggestions, Keep an eye out in the want list section next month I will probably be looking for Mercury dimes or something. And yes clint I am
