Ya got me on that one - but I'll guess possibly Turkish or one of the other Asia Minor countries. Wait til satootoko comes around - he'll know
Don't know if I can live up to that or not, but here goes a try - It's from the Yemen Arab Republic (one of four "Yemens"). I'm fairly certain that it is Y#42, 1 riyal. If it is, it's cu-ni, ~28.5mm in diameter, mintage 7.8-million, CV 50¢ VF, $1.25 XF, $2.50 Unc. The top picture is the obverse, and needs to be rotated a little more than 90 degrees to the right. The dual date 1978-AH1398 (roughly equivalent years) is in the segment under the denomination. The reverse, of course, is almost exactly upside down, and was the key to identification. That design is in the wonderfully helpful Krause "Instant Identifier" pages. The date is in what Krause calls "Eastern Arabic" characters. From the photo I would guess a light strike, rather than wear, on the reverse, but I can't grade it (other than "at least VF") without seeing the coin in hand.
