Is it a VAM? Yes. All Morgan and Peace dollars are VAMs. It is a designation for the die pair and die state. The majority of VAMs do not carry any premium.

From what I remember, there aren't many key/rare VAMs for 1897-0. There is one with a large crack on the reverse and a displaced field. I don't see this diagnostic on your coin. It looks like it's been cleaned. I'll let the experts judge the grade.

The coin has xf-45/au50 details IMO, but it has been cleaned.

The coin would get body bagged for cleaning. I would say a net grade of VF30 for this one. $15.00-$20.00. Just my opinion.

I agree it would net grade of VF.

I'd say AU50. As to the cleaning - I don't seen any signs of it. 'Course it might be my eyes

If the pics were a bit bigger it would be easier to see and provide grade estimates etc.

Is everyone saying it has been cleaned because the fields have very different colors?

Also, an xf-45 IMO (not sure about the cleaning though).

um well the reason why the coin looks brighter on top is cause the camera was blocking some of the light

also i read in photograde that in some branch mints the eagles breast was struck light and grading would take that into account is this one of those cases

ill get bigger pics and will try to get it so the camera doesnt block it

Not sure about the VAM, but I'd say AU-53 on the grade. Remember the New Orleans coins are pretty lightly struck.

it looks a little funny being lighter around the letters but a bigger pict would help

There is a nice little gouge/scratch on the reverse above "god" in the motto. That would bring it down a notch IMHO.

I don't think the coin would go AU, but if it did value would be about $75. I think a more accurate value would be about $35.
