does any one now of any good coin shops/ dealers to visit in costa rica. im heading there with my school in april. flea markets any good? ill probably be only getting junk silver and maybe bullion if its uber under spot. any suggestions anyones?
I've never seen a coin shop there, but then it's been a while and I wasn't exactly searching for them. However, if you get the chance, check out the Gold Museum (Museo de Oro). It's right downtown in San Jose, and has a nice numismatic exhibit.
I believe there's one in the whole country but it's open only a few hours per day. Paul Green used to write about getting coins here. I guess collecting coins is very common but finding anything but very common coins isn't. He always marveled at how tough all the moderns from the entire region were. Most of them have been destroyed and the few that survive invariably have extensive wear. He said most coins were found at booths that lined the city streets. ...Something like a flea market.
