I have been interested in coins turning up in movies for some time and several years ago created a webpage with some illustrations and DVD captures. I have added a few films, most recently, the 1980 fantasy film "Somewhere in Time", which used a 1979 US Lincoln Cent as part of the story. This film starred Christopher Reeve as a modern-day (1979) playwright and Jane Seymour as a young stage actress in 1912. Christopher goes back in time to 1912 to meet Jane, but accidently pulls out a 1979 penny which brings him back to his present. According to the DVD extras, the producers made an enlarged penny as a prop for the film but it was not used. The link is on my webpage below, under "Coins in Movies".
I remember an episode of "The Three Stooges" where Mo gets excited over a $20 gold piece. I am sure there must be Wild West movies that feature silver dollars and gold pieces. I would keep in mind that precious metals were more of a bank to bank commerce issue instead of something where people commonly used the silver and gold in every day transactions. 100 plus years ago most of the citizenry lived on farms and did not go to town that often.
I know it's not a movie, but this episode of Amos and Andy was a good one. Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9tY1wNZplc Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROt1N3nFmE8&feature=related Part 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63GsmhpR3LI&feature=related
The link to his website is in the signature, right below the message body. Maybe you set your forum preferences (Thread Display Options) to not display sigs? Christian
The recent "Cowboys and Aliens" has a flashback scene where Large Cents are dropping on the ground. If I remember right... it was late
X-men First Class has a german coin in it, an episode of Leave It To Beaver dealt with a 1914 D lincoln
Not really a movie but ... this is shown in movie theaters in Germany. It is a spot advertising a charity initiative that wants customers to "round up" in supermarkets and other participating stores. So they use - in an animation - lots of "copper" coins (1, 2, 5 cent) to build various projects that could be supported this way. The voice (yeah, all in German) is that of Til Schweiger, a well known actor here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAqHImimbgY Christian
My favorite. Mouth: **lifting up coins to see** George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Sheen Steph: Martin Sheen! The Kennedy you idiot! Mouth: Same difference. He played Kennedy once
Ok, this got me looking. I haven't seen these, but pulled them from IMDB In an episode of The Simpsons, Bart and Homer take up coin collecting http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226562/ There are a few old documentaries about coins 1916 How Uncle Sam Gets His Coins http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1343932/ 1915 The Manufacture of Coin http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1228937/ American Buffalo 1996 has a buffalo nickel on it's cover, and is about 2 guys trying to steal a rare coin from a second hand shop. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115530/ An episode of State Trooper 1959 deals with a stolen coin collection http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115530/ in an episode of The Streets of San Francisco 1973 "A greed-consumed numismatist plots to switch a wealthy collector's gold double-eagle coins with counterfeits" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0711495/
I have seen the "Streets of San Francisco" episode, titled "A Gathering of Eagles". Joseph Cotten played an elderly wealthy man who was going to donate his collection of double eagles (US $20 gold coins) to a charity. His secretary Belinda Montgomery has a boyfriend John Saxon who is a crook. John was the son of a respected coin dealer. It was a pretty good episode with a plot about counterfeiting rare gold coins, smuggling planchets into the US from Mexico, and murders. By the way, my website is located at http://www.brianrxm.com
In the spirit of error coins, there are error movies... I forget the name of it, but John Wayne starred. It was western, presumably set in the 1800's. Definitely NOT the 1920's. His character nonchalantly tossed some Peace dollars on a card table. I hope someone can corroborate that though, because it's been many years since I saw it! -L
has anyone seen Dear John i believe there are alot of scenes with coins in there but not too sure, can't say i've sit through to watch the whole thing as it is a "romantic drama" >.>
This: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1136&lotNo=2455 OK, it was TV, not the movies, but it's still a cool coin. I remember an Indian Head cent climbing the wall in "Ghost". I also remember some overall horrible numismatics in the movie "Sahara" (which, interestingly enough, I saw on a road trip to the Kansas City ANA). Back to TV, there was also an animated 1796 quarter in an episode of Tennessee Tuxedo. There are undoubtedly a ton of others. BTW, to the person who mentioned Til Schweiger; international audiences would probably best remember him playing Hugo Stieglitz in Inglourious Basterds.
