Yes, I know I mis-spelled mistake. With all the postings about e-bay, I thought I would share this. I logged onto e-bay and started a search on "silver bullion". The auction ending soonest was for what appeared to be a 1 oz silver bar. It was going for around $5, so I thought people must be asleep, I can get a great deal! I entered a bid quickly and won the item. Upon closer examination I saw that it was a silver plated copper bar!!! Oh well, I was stupid and have to suffer the consequences. Then I looked at the seller's 99.6% positive ratings. The negative ones were almost invariably about "Hey, this isn't silver" which gained a reply of "Read the auction details more closely". I also noted how there were many positive ones that just said things like "Wow, what a nice bar". Here is what I decided to do: 1) I paid for the item - I bought it, it is my responsibility 2) I sent an e-mail to the seller explaining that I goofed up and would be responsible for the mistake, but I would appreciate it if he would cancel the sale. He canceled the sale and saved me a few bucks and lots of bad feelings.

Just posting this to help out anyone who might do such a bone-headed thing in a hurry.

Once i was looking at Liberty Nickels and i bought some from the same seller.
After i bought and payed them i noticed i ordered 2 times the same date.
Send him a mail and asked if it was possible to cancel one of the 2 or exchange one for a date i didnt have.
There was no problem for theseller, and he switched the coin out for me with a date i didnt have.

I also made the mistake of entering a quick bid then, but it seems like some sellers are nice enough to help you out when there are problems or mistakes

Yeah, I've bid on a couple things that were either my not reading the description correctly or the wording was intentionally mis construed to fool potential buyers. Now I do a bit more research first. I have learned there isn't a single thing I am shopping for that is a "one of a kind". Somebody else on eBay has it also. Now I take time to see what else the seller has listed. Then when looking at his feedback, I like to check and see what items he BOUGHT ! I mean if he's recently got a Cherrypicker's Guide, I can assume he has searched his coins.

But for me, that's all a part of the experience. Fortunately I have time to do it.

That is why I rarely even look at the ending soonest listings. I usually only look at the newly listed and watch any interesting items. Glad you got the sale cancelled.

I bid on what I thought was a diamond; turned out to be the blastic baggie THEY had bought a diamond in, from a different seller. I was pretty ****ed off.

There are also auctions for a PHOTO of an item, such as a video game system, which people buy without properly reading the descriptions.

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Actually I guess biding at the last minute is "manual sniping", and I have gotten some older proof sets at prices quite a bit below the usual price. Just gotta be careful.

Not all sellers are honest... this clip is hilarious (I think most have seen it):

Good to hear there are good sellers out there. I have won some pretty cool things in the last seconds of an auction (not coin related) The problem is reading the description with the timer ticking down.

I think some of these people purposely make their postings vague at best to catch people who aren't paying close attention....if they wanted people to be aware of what they were buying they would include big letters saying something like, "silver-CLAD bar"....at least he was honest enough to cancel the sale for you.

good lord i hate judge judy....while she had the right on this one she is a horrible person on that show!

This is one of the reason to never bid on an auction not fully read and in the last seconds. And I believe in this case judge judy got it right - and I never did like the show.

don't rush. my biggest mistake was bidding on a gold coin. read the listing too fast and bid for a 1/2oz coin and then went back and noticed it was a 1/20 coin. there's a price difference! Emailed the seller like 3 minutes later, the auction still had hours to run and he retracted/cancelled the bid. now i double check listings

I've seen the video before and I believe Judge Judy was completely in the wrong on her judgement. I think they most likely DID bid on a photograph of the cellphones. The sellers ethics may have been questionable but they did nothing wrong legally. Judy based her verdict on her sense of outrage over the ethics and not on any legal points of law. And if this had been an actual court case the judges comments from the bench attacking the defendants could possibly have been actionable as slander. I also suspect Judy knew the plaintiffs didn't have a case because she asked the defendant to point out where the ad indicated you were only bidding on a picture but then would not let her answer the question.
