Hi, we have a coin 1774, BRITA NIA, on the other side is GEORGIUS III REX, and picture of funny looking guy with a big nose. Anyone know anything about this coin?

How about some pictures of the coin? It will tell us more infomation of the grade of the coin. If I am not mistaken, it is a British coin, but I am not too sure of the denomination. Others will tell you what exactly it could be.

Actually, I found it to be a 1736 spanish 8 reale cob. I'm new at this so I don't know how to find the worth other than comparisons on e-bay. Any suggestions?

I'd be very interested in seeing your basis for that conclusion.
    • The word "Brittania" historically appeared on British coinage, not Spanish, since it is the name of the mythical Goddess representative of the nation.
    • George III was the mad King of England in whose reign the "trouble in the colonies" led to the establishment of the United States.
    • There is no historical evidence that Spain ever had a ruler named "George", let alone three of them.
    • If it is ~23mm in diameter, your description fits KM#602, a copper farthing of Great Britain, valued at $10 F to $185 Unc. in the 2001 18th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins, which mentions that there were many contemporary counterfeits.
    • If it is ~30mm wide, your description fits KM#601, a copper half-penny, $15-285.
    • The only Spanish 1736 8 Reales listed in the SCWC (KM#358) is not a cob, has a shield on the obverse with a coat of arms on the reverse and has a "Philippus" (Philip V - 1700-1746) legend

Best suggestion would be to post a picture of the coin - then we could help you. Until then we are only guessing.

Meanwhile, this is what a 8 reales from the period looks like.

Is that what your coin looks like ? If it doesn't, then it isn't what you think it is.

Exactly. The Krause catalogs use the Yeoman (Y#) and Craig (C#) numbers for coins that have them, and assign their own KM#s to the rest of the world's coinage, including US coins, such as KM#110 - the Morgan dollars that so many forum members are hung up on. :D

lol, this is a little how i felt at the big coin show this weekend. I don't dislike the Morgan dollar, but nearly every dealer had stacks of them, all over the place! They were inwscapable, i just kept thinking that finding what I was looking for would be much easier if I didn't have to wade through mounds of Morgans to find it! ;)
