    Hi everyone,

What do you think my 1906 IHC would grade? Also checkout the N in One, and the E in Cent, possible doubling or variety type?

Looks to me to be some mild Longacre Doubling. (fancy name for Machine Doubling)

As far as the grading, looks to be about MS61 or so. The touch of wear on the reverse leaves and top left shield and on the obverse (cheeks) would justify the grade.

I just asked the same thing about one of my IHC's. (the doubling). I was told it is called DDD or die deterioration doubling.

Opinions differ as to the exact cause of Longacre doubling. Some believe it was intentionally done to prolong die life while others see it as a form of damage doubling. Regardless of the cause, it is very coincidental that this occurs on many of Mr. Longacre's designs.

There are two theories, and both agree it was done to the master die. First, Longacre doubling was caused by the punches used to impress the lettering. Second, it was something done by moving the die punch slightly and re-impressing it.

    Here are two good explanations:

Frankly, the second theory doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever (I would think there would be telltale signs of re-impression, but there never are), regardless it is one of the two theories.

Kook, If you thought this coin had some wear on it, it wouldn't be a MS coin, but an AU coin. I think this is a very nice coin that could grade MS63. IMO.

Longacre doubling...repunching of lettering, has nothing to do with machine doubling. It is extremely common with IHC's and sometimes quite dramatic.
