Hi guys, I have looked around the web trying to identify this medal set with no real leads, so I thought of asking the group for help. I know somebody here knows everything there is about this set. I have seen the seated figure medal posted on the site in the past, but can't seem to find the thread. Anyway, what do I have? I like the set and I was hoping to buy it, but we don't know what its value is, so any input and advice is welcome. Thanks in advance, Matt
Hi Matt,,,,,,,,,What you have there is a Icelandic 1930 Althingi comm set,, that was made to commerate the 1000 years of the world first and most lasting parliment. This set has grown in popularity in the past five years and has gone from selling for less then $300 up to $750 today for a very nice unc set,,,,,,but most of them sell in the $500 to $600 dollar range in unc. These coins have the value along the rim,,,,but since they were never signed into law as a coin they are now just medals.
Thanks Iceman, I knew you guys would be able to help. I had no idea they would bring that much I thought 200 max. Your set is really nice, I like the toning on the seated figure piece. Matt
Thank You Matt,,,,,, Yes this set can sell for that kind of money. How much does the seller wants for the set you have pictured ,,,I know that a few selllers are asking some high prices for not so nice sets ,,,,,so be careful and look real hard at the medals to see if any of them show any signs of wear because these medals did circulate in Iceland as coins because back then when there was a shortage of coins and people would use even other coins,,,, like the ones from denmark,, Iceland's mother country back in the day. And sellers have found the boxes from this set and made up sets with ciculated pieces to make you think that the set is a orignal ......So be careful
Well, this set came into the shop in a larger group of medals and was purchased as a group. I picked these out and was to do the homework to find out what a decent price should be. I would say that the set is unc with original surfaces, but stored poorly and toned a little gray. Thanks for your input, I didn't want to shell out too much dough so if my buddy wants too much, I'll pass and let someone else step up to them. What would you say would be fair price to pay for the set pictured? Thanks, matt
If this set is in unc and taking into account for the toning on the 10 Kronur I would say that this set would sell for around $400 to $450 tops. The set was called a matte proof with the 5 kronur showing more darken areas in the back ground or fields of the coin ,,,The 10 kronur came with a gray finish toning on both sides and the 2 kronur came with darken fields a the shield side of the coin but not the back with the seating figure of the women,,,,,,If you can get this set from your friend for $400 you did good,,but don't go over $450 if you can,,,,,,,,,Good luck with it.
Thanks Iceman, I appreciate all the help. CoinTalk is like having the worlds best coin club at your finger tips. The "like" is a thanks for taking the time to help me out. Matt
