1956 D wheat penny

    Is this some kind of mint mistake IMG_20120314_205016.jpg IMG_20120314_205016.jpg IMG_20120314_204949.jpg on one penny the D is closer to the date then the other.

    No. The MM's were added by hand until 1990's (someone correct me if my date is off). They only become interesting when the mark gets into some other detail. There are many coins with 2 MM's - some obviously apart and some just slightly apart.

    According to the redbook, they were added by hand to the working dies up until 1985. In 1990 they started being added to the production hub, which was then used to make working dies. The proof MMs were added to the production die in 1985.

    Both guys are correct. In addition, with the hand punched MM's back then, there were a lot of RPM's and OMM's that happend too. Which makes those older cents very collectible and very much sought after by variety buffs.
