Hated paying $30 for this half dime. However I looked all over the internet and could not find such a nice example for the same price. Bought locally from a guy I know.

It's the start of my Nickel Type set.

    Feel free to grade it.

How's the luster on the coin? From the details in the pics it's AT LEAST XF and depending on luster and high point wear (photos make it look like it has some) it's AU or Unc. If it has wear but at least half luster it's AU, no wear and has luster it's MS. Anyway you cut it nice coin.

looks good to me, if you like it, in a couple of years you won't worry about what you paid for it. just checked you got a freat price anyway.

Think koinjester has it right, probably VF Details.

So you probably paid a bit too much for that particular coin. Just my guess, I don't know the market for that type, and I don't know if this is a tough coin or not. It's a little difficult thing to learn to spot (at first), but identifying corrosion or other things that will prevent a coin from getting a full grade (meaning not details) is definitely worth your while to learn. It will enable you in the future to talk to the dealer and say that you like the coin, but with the problem, it won't grade and can he/she move the price to allow for that.

I tried offering $25 but he said he paid that for it.

While $30 was over paying in some people's eye's. I looked all over eBay and could not find in this condition for $30. The cheapest was $35.

I guess things happen very quickly in this day and age. Maybe we should all slow down a little, lol.

I'm wondering why you went with a proof Jefferson?

The toning is real but some may say it is AT and not NT

But it looks good on the coin. Congrats on a set
Congrats on the photos. I like both.

There are several on BIN same condition as yours for under $30.

    I just looked.

Not with that much detail. I just checked Ebay too. The OP got a deal at $30.

why not use a older jefferrson? Aren't you missing that nickel series that happened a couple years back too?

Hey guys, praise this fellow for his desire to put the set together regardless of how much he spent, or if it's cleaned, or is used ketchup to get the tarnish out. I know we breath a deep sigh every so often, but who can argue with a man on a mission. Congrats Detecto, now that you have your base set together, time so save some money so you can upgrade each one to AU-MS. Thanks for showing us your progression!

Are you happy with the coin? If so, price doesn't matter. I think $30 was well spent. I have a half dime a notch below the one this would grade at and I think I paid about $15 for it at the time.

Hmmmm....I might upgrade the set, but later on this year. This spring my next one I want to do is dimes. Luckily the draped bust is not in that set...very expensive coin.

If I upgrade the set to AU examples were talking about $200.

I was looking at capital and they don't make a type holder for all the cents, which I really wanted to do.

I am happy with the coin. While I did not think I overpaid, it's good to save money.

Nice job Detecto. I would suggest you add in a capped bust half dime, silver war nickel, and a westward journey nickel for a more complete nickel type set. :)

I think it's a good place to start. It it were me, I would have gone with an original designed Jefferson nickel rather than the new design because it circulated for so long (perhaps your birth year would have been a good choice). I would also have not gone with a proof because the rest of the coins in the set are business strikes. But, that is what is great about this hobby...everyone can do something different. So, it looks good.
