I am currently involted with purchasing a coin from a member of this site. we have agreed on a price and want a bank transfer or money order, Im now concerned that if I send the money order if Ill get the coin, any thoughts on protection for myself? Never have done this before always face 2 face with a seller. Thanks for your imput. I dont have a paypay account, but he also didnt offer to accept that type of payment either. My daughter does have one if that gives me any better protection, Thanks, Jim

You don't have to be a Paypal member to send money to someone using it.

Is he a new member or a old member? In the end you just have to decide for yourself if its worth the risk. Personally I would never send some one a money order or back transfer that I didn't know.

If he is concerned with Paypal fees offer to pay a little more to help out with the fees. This way everybody wins.

Here is a chart to help you figure out what his fees will be on your purchase.

PayPal, unfortunately, appears to be your only protection since you do not know your seller. It offer's buyer protection should you need it.

Folks should NEVER trust a fellow forum member unless you actually KNOW them and/or they can provide you with fellow member references.

Postal money order. Write in the subject line what you are paying for. Send it certified (they have to sign for it), return receipt. ONLY send to a HOME address - verify on the internet. If the person does not send the item and cashes the money order, depending on the amount, it could be a felony.

That's about as serious as check fraud IMHO, acloco. I would go with what jloring said & get references.

    Paypay account?

I didn't think that you could post in the classified with only 7 posts, but I could be wrong. Either way, I'd pass.

Paypal is the only safe way to go. Sending money out certified won't do any good if the seller don't send the coins. My advice is this, tell the seller you would cover the paypal fee, otherwise the best thing to do is to cancel the transaction and move on.

over the last 10 years I have bought many coins from people i didn't know. mostly from ads in numismatic news. many thousands of dollars in total and never got stuck. some coins i didn't like and returned and never got stuck. that's my experience. the internet has spooked many people. I guess because there are a lot of scam artists. I had a member here want a coin i had couple weeks ago and when I wanted the money i never heard back. all for a $4 coin. as if i'm gonna be a cheat for $4. i guess that's what it's come to.

Im not a very trusting person but I would trust most any 'veteran' member of this forum with a coin deal. Somebody thats new with only 7 posts? Not so much.
For future reference, often times people will offer up their ebay user id and associated feedback as proof of their legitimacy for online transactions.

Actually, makes it a federal crime. U.S. Post Office was used to transport the payment and the payment was in the form of a postal money order.
