Anyone? I have not once recieved a coin as a gift. My family knows very well that I like coins. I get crap that goes in the closet, or worse, and is a waste of money. Never a coin, though.
The usual reason for this is that the average person does not know anything about coins so they will not purchase one as a gift. They are afraid of paying too much - buying the wrong coin - or of being ripped off. If you want coins for gifts - make those around you aware of it. Tell them about the Mint programs and that they can buy there - most people don't even know that. Or mention a specific coin you want at a specific dealer's you trust. That will allow them to get you what you want.
Rather than place unwanted gift in the closet sell them on ebay take the cash and buy yourself a coin. You could even tell the gift giver thank you and you made good use of their gift.
You could always say, "I also collect paper money, but only in large denominations and nothing issued before 1999"
Yeah, i have never gotten a coin for christmas either because the people that get me stuff have no clue what a 1883-O morgan dollar MS-63 PL is.
I've never got coins for Christmas, exactly. I have got stuff that has helped with my coin collecting, though. For example, last Christmas my wife got me a nice new loupe. She's also bought me books in the past too. She does have a bit of knowledge about coins, though. Her dad used to buy her coins when she was a kid. Plus, it's easier to pick out stuff like that.
Coin books are great gift ideas also, although most(the good ones) aren't available at your nearest Barnes&Noble.
I've gotten Silver Eagles for christmas when I was younger. How about the rest of you guys? I'm sure there are some good stories to share.
My birthday is 4 days after Xmas and since the time of the original state quarters, my brother has always gotten me a Silver Eagle and the years' proof set for Xmas and my birthday...
Whoa! This thread was made the year I found my 1941 wheat penny and started collecting. More than 2/3 of my lifetime ago....
