I'm a not a fan of cents, but I'm starting to like the woody look. Is there a book on this? and what to watch out for is it easy to duplicate?
No books that I am aware of. Probably the best info you can find would be in the thread http://www.cointalk.com/t65353/. Doug keeps mentioning that people try to fake the pattern, but I have never seen any that I could really call fake.
Actually I discovered it by accident experimenting with removal of g/vg common dates with verdigris. If you dip the coin in vinegar and then rub with any wooden item harder than the rose throne or toothpick it can remove some tone, patina or brown coloring only where you rub and it creates a woodie effect. Granted depending on the dip or bath you can also tell it's a cleaned coin but it can be done.
I can spot one about 5 miles away. After looking at several hundred woodie cents over the last couple months, you kind of get the idea. And I have a new found appreciation for being a stingy buyer, I could have made a mistake buying my first fake toned woodie.
Well since your 4 miles better than the next guy do you think you can post a couple images of real and fake so I can see don't tell me what is fake let me see if I can tell. If you have a few images of a good fake and a bad fake that would be cool.
Fair enough, let me see what I can scrape up for you. And maybe guys like rlmcents can throw up a nice example of the real deal while I look for a fake.
Sorry, didn't feel like taking it out of the hazy and stained holder, but, I'm sure you get the overall idea...
