...but I finally completed by Buffalo Nickel collection. I started around ten years old with lawn mowing money, and got most of the common dates. Got busy in high school and college, and ignored coins for 15 years. Got back in a few years ago, buying coins with significantly higher grades, and now i'm done. This is the first non-current set I've completed. Of course, I now have the strangest set of Buffalos you can imagine - all the keys are vf+, all the common dates are g-f.
Congrats! Wish I could say the same. I think I've got 21 left. Mostly the pricier mint marked ones that you might only find 2 or 3 examples of at a show.
growing up buying only low quality coins, condition rarity was a big shock to my system. the 21-s and 26-s were thus the last two pieces to the puzzle.
Congratulations on a great accomplishment! I'm on the twenty year plan also, and have four dates to go yet.
Wow, that is something to be proud of. To me, that is what collecting is all about. It is so much more meaningful than just buying a album that's already complete. Way to go! What's next?
Congrads on that!! Luv the lawn mowing for coins...I have "dug" up worms... "picked up" night crawlers/night walkers...just to buy some coins. Cheers
Congratulations. I had started a collection of Buffalos 20 years ago as well, but I still have many dates left to go, and at today's prices I doubt that I will ever be able to complete it.
I'm about where you were when you stopped in your teens. My set is still just the coins I assembled by my late teens and I am now (at 34) beginning the process to complete - I have ten left, but, like you, those ten are most of the semi's and keys. I'm not too picky with this set, so I will be targeting Fine to Very Fine. Those grades provide the right balance of price, "history" and sufficient design detail.
There's something extremely honest about a circulated set. The examples therein were once hard at work in commerce. Blue collar, the back bone of both our nation and our hobby. It's not often that you see a completed one any more. Congratulations on your most marvelous accomplishment.
Congrats on completing a collection! I'm about 2/3 of the way to getting my Buffalo Nickel collection done. The only full collections I have completed are the current ones (Roosevelt Dime, Presidential Dollar, National Park Quarter etc), Lincoln Memorial, IKE, SBA, Jefferson 1938-2003, Jefferson Westward Journey, State Quarter, and Franklin Half Dollar.
