Hi, I have a chinese cash coin inscribed 'Tai Ping Tung Pao'. There were two issues of this kind: one of Northern Sung dynasty, and one of Tai Ping rebels (the rebels also produced 'Tai Ping Tien Kuo' coins, but these are rather different). Now my question: anyone knows what distinguishes these two issues? Anyone knows of a good web site discussing Tai Ping rebel coins? Thanks, Notoco.
Thank you, a very nice site! Even if I do not find what I need there, I'll certainly learn a lot! Notoco.
Well, I am not an expert in cash coins, but I think you can start making comparison on the chinese writing styles.. like taking note of the character strokes and shapes(Tai Ping and N Sung periods differ by nearly a thousand years... there has to be a difference in writing style somewhere), the rim measurements or probably the size.
Yeah, after browsing the recommended site I compared the sizes and scripts; I concluded it must be the older (Norther Sung) coin. I wish I can find a reasonable priced and reasonable complete catalog of the cash coins... My local dealer has a copy of Schjoth for $120 if you can believe it! Thanks, Notoco
