I don't know if this is a cultural thing, but there really wasn't much coin or bullion collecting in my family background with the exception of my grandfather who was a conservative from the Mid-West. I collected as an alternative to Wall Street investing which never benefited my father or grandfather much. Anyone else here not have much tradition of coins in their family background?
My parents love to tell me that my coin collection is a waste of time. But of course I'm the only person in our family who collects stuff that appreciates (slightly) in value. My dad like the Indianapolis Colts and my mother like Coca-Cola. I don't like their collection, but at least I keep it to myself. And on a slight tangent I do invest in the stock market and I'm in the green.
My wife gives me **** over my collecting. She hates to see cash go out the door to buy old coins. I have a brother who collects indian artifacts and another who collects Hot Wheels cars so they can relate. At least I got her into the habit of dumping her pocket change in my jar so I get a chance to check it out.
My father worked at the Danbury Mint as a director of special projects, working with Roger Tory Peterson and Eric Sloane on various projects. But he did not collect PMs or collectible coins.
Im the first coin guy in family history as far as i know. At first i was a little worried that my parents or friends would find it nerdy but they all actually find it interesting and my history teacher loves when i show her coins from the time period were learning about
My dad was a collector, and one of my uncles, but neither were serious collectors. A proof set here or there and wheat cents mostly. I didn't really get to share the experience with my dad, because he passed around the same time I got into it. He did do the gold and silver thing in the 70's and 80's, and My mom worked for a large Brokerage firm, so I have been in the stock market since I was young. We got shares of stock as stocking stuffers. I think my sister thinks I'm a nerd for collecting coins, but other than her, the rest of my family thinks its fine. (As long as they don't have to listen to me and my boring coin stories)
I`m the first collector in my family but my Grandad was a watch repairer/maker, my mum thinks I get my interest in this stuff from him My dad loves my coin collecting, he always comes along with me to car boot sales and shops if I`m doing anything in relation to old stuff (coins antiques) It`s the one time in the week I get to spend a good time with him between school and stuff. My mum doesn`t say much about my collecting she prefers the antiques I buy over the coins. My brother being a brother never says anything good about them!!
I wish my family would have been collectors. My mother did have a WL half that sparked my coin collecting when young, and most relatives had some drawer junk laying around, but no serious collectors. I would seriously be jealous of someone whose father collected. That would have been such a cool way of growing up.
Both my parents collected coins, but they were not serious collectors. Out of all the things I collect they like the coins the most.
One of my teachers has a life like that. His dad collected commemoratives and owned a pharmacy back in the day, which he used to buy silver for cheap. My teacher collects Franklin's and commemoratives. He's a really cool fellow.
After I started collecting I learned that my dad and grandmother on my mother's side of the family were collectors. I also have an aunt and uncle on my dad's side of the family are coin collectors too.
I'm a second generation collector, but definately more serious than my father was. My wife deals with my collecting habits, but might change her mind if she knew what I spend sometimes. I'm sure a few others can relate to this situation.
First in my family as far as I know, no one in the family shows any interest (or support). Doesn't bother me at all. Funny thing is, the first coin I got, in the age of about 7-8, I got from my dad, who got it from his dad, who found it in the garden. Since I kept the first coin, and all other coins I got later, and since I collected stamps quite seriously as a kid, which I also still keep, there must have been some mutation in the non-collectors genes of my family.
Well, one of my sisters makes reference to "Silas Marner" and a brother uses the term "shyster" occasionally. Basically they want me to make money at it which I haven't much done recently.
My step-grandfather got me into coins in 1985. On my grandmothers side her grandfather or uncle collected cause I ended up with bags of world coins that were given to her from him, all loose though. But serious collecting, I am the first & both my parents dont care. My mom acts interested when I show her ancients though, she likes the history attatched to them.
I would settle for that Mat, lol. My wife is Thai and even collecting Thai coins cannot interest her. Her Thai friends like them, but she doesn't have an interest unless its gold jewelry. Btw, not US gold jewelry, but high carat Thai gold.
Well I try to give my mom a very brief history of the emperor/empress on the coin. Obviously she finds characters like commodus, Nero & elagabalus interesting vs Pius, Hadrian and the like.
