My book says thatthe sp. gr. for mercury is 13.54 and copper is 8.96. That is 51% heavier in my math.

I got my scale today and weighed the cent. It weighs 2.51g.

As I said in the beginning, I think it's the real deal. Only way you will know for sure is to have it authenticated.

You are correct sir, I was wrong on that point.. I was working from memory and I thought the SG of Mercury was 11.5 OK so the mercury layer as thick as a copper layer would be .08 grams and you would still have to have a layer three times as thick to be sure of exceeding the mint tolerance. Anything less and the scale could still show a within tolerance weight so weighing it still doesn't really tell you anything.

Still easier to fake with a simple electroplating.

How much would you pay for a cent missing its copper plating in AU condition?
