I picked this one up this week for low XF money, I intend to send it to NGC and I'm hoping for an AU, but if it comes back as an XF I'll still be fine, it has great detail and is really well struck for being a pre-21 Walker. What do you guys think, will it go AU?
I'd say only a slight chance.Just to much wear and damage to go AU IMO.So I'd say XF45 and I agree with you on it having great detail. B12
I also guessed XF-45. Nice coin with honest wear. Tough to get in those middle-high grades like that.
Isn't this the one on that Ebay item that only showed the front of the coin???...and people emailed and asked and it had a D??? XF/AU. Speedy
yep, that's it, her photos mailed were MUCH more useful that the ones in the auction. I seriously misjudged the coin when it was first presented in the post and after getting the new photos I decide to try to get it. I took it to my dealer yesterday for an opinion and he offered nearly what I paid, so it worked out. I looked through a bunch of photos of XF and AU coins on Heritage and Teletrade and this one is easily better than every XF I saw, details wise, no XF's had anywhere near such full skirt lines as this coin. Remember that the pre-21 coins are graded much differently than the later years. The issue in my mind is the dark toning that is masking nearly all the luster. In fact the only luster I see through the toning is around her right arm (facing left) and in front of her face and then a tiny bit above her left shoulder and between Liberty and the sun, on the rev the only luster visible is around LF DOLL of "half dollar". I like the toning, it is original and natural looking, but there would be (IMO) a fair amount of luster revealed if I sent the coin to NCS to be conserved and it may be worth that if improved eye appeal would bump the grade.
Whew...tough call. I would have said AU, but Cave said there is very little luster present, which IMO would take it to EF40. But the DETAIL is so much better than EF. AGAIN IMO.
The coin looks XF-AU except one thing that stands out. Maybe it's just my eyes or did somebody shot the eagle in the chest ? Also , there seems to be some damage on the front around the left chest area and hand. If that is in fact a hole I think it will be graded as damaged. I certailnly hope not. Good luck.
It looks like significant post mint damage on the eagles breast. Body Bag most likely, unless you send to ANAC's and it may net out at F or VF due to the damage.
well I showed it to the nGC guy at the mid-America coin expo today and he agreed that NGC would bag it for "environmental damage". His direct quote was, "It's a no doubt AU, you should send it to NCS, they can remove the gunk on the coin and if the surface underneath isn't damaged it will grade AU." He went on to explain that until the gunk is removed there is no guarantee of what it will look like under there, but even in an NCS AU details holder it will be wrth twice what I paid, so no complaints here! Heres to hoping that the gunk is removable, and that once the heavy toning is removed, the luster will be revived.
I am going with GDJMSP, nice detailed coin, may get XF DETAILS but that is it. Damage to the bird does this coin in.
hmm, looking at the photos I posted again the blob on the eagle appears to be indented when it is really a raised spot of [stuff] stuck to the surface, the same is true of the obverse gunk above her hand it is raised and sitting on the surface of the coin. I will be sending it to NCS and when it returns I'll update the thread with new pics so that everyone can see the conserved version.
Well, I just received an email saying that this coin (which I did send to NCS) is being returned by NGC!! The good news is that means that the gunk on it was removed and the surfaces underneath were undamaged, leaving the coin market acceptable and slabable according to NGC. I am about as thrilled as can be be with this turn of events and once the coin is back home I will post pics of the finished product. Here's to hoping it looks great now!
I'm confused. If you sent the coin to NCS for conservation, and it is being returned to you by NGC,and they say it's slabable, why doesn't NGC just grade it for you and save some time.Maybe I'm reading your post incorrectly?
