I know nothing about coins and have had this coin since my grandfather's passing in 1978.
It is copper coloured on one side with wheat and the other side is silver with Mercury's profile and the date 1943.
The coin is not in great shape, however you can see the layers of the two metals on the edge.
I have tried to take photos of both sides and the edge but can't seem to get the size small enough to attach to this post. I will try again tomorrow. If anyone knows of a coin like this and can tell me how much it might be worth, I would really appreciate it. I have no coin collectors in my rural area that might be able to help.
    Thank you everyone!

Well, I would like pics of the edge to see if it's a "Magician's Coin" or just two coins stuck together. Sorry, not a lot of value either way

I am using a Mac and have just bought Aperture, which should be able to resize. I just don't know how yet.

    what is a Magician's Coin?

A magician coin is one made by combining faces of 2 separate coins. Thus a 2 headed lincoln cent or say a morgan dollar could be made usually by either grinding the lost side down on both coins and using solder or glue to hold together -or- by using a lathe to cut away one side of one coin inside the rim and inlaying the reduced second coin into the cut-down. Some even have skill to thread larger coins to make a "spy" coin you can carry your micro-dots or cyanide in :)

    Welcome to the forum!

I suppose that could explain this coin, but layers are really thin, as thin as fabric.
    Thank you for the explanation.

Sounds exactly like a magician's coin. I'd hang on to it. It's not really collectible because they're still available. However, if you were to find a very early version, like an Indian head cent or barber coin that was made into a magician's coin, that would be ubercool!

Two coins put together (rather poorly). This wasn't done at the mint.

Now I know what it is. I have kept it in my safe for years. Love to know the story behind it. He also left me US and Cdn silver dollars, 1896 Newfoundland 5 cent coin, 1966 half dollar.
    Nice to keep as mementos!
Thank you all for your help!

Dates of the dollars? Also mint marks (if before 1921 its under the eagle, 1921-1935 below the word ONE) will be needed. As for the half, it's 40% silver and worth about $5.

    more information

1921 silver dollar there is a mark just above and between the D & O of DOLLAR

1971 silver dollar there is a mark attached to the neck of the bust

1966 Cdn silver dollar mark is to the bottom left of the canoe interesting..the 6's in the date are higher than the 9

    1966 US half dollar

I have others but they are not accessible at the moment.

That 1966 half dollar is 40% silver, 0.1479 oz ASW

The 1896 Newfoundland 5 cent piece is 0.925 silver, 0.035 oz ASW. It's actually fairly rare, only 400,000 were minted. In very good condition, it's worth hundreds of dollars. In poor condition, it's worth $5-10.

The 1971 dollar is an Eisenhower dollar. It is not silver unless it has an S mint mark.

The 1966 Canadian silver dollar - the difference in number heights is normal. However, there is an extremely rare variety (485 minted) with smaller beads near the edge. Read more here: http://www.cointalk.com/t17575/

There were two types of 1921 dollars - the Morgan dollar and the Peace dollar. You have the Morgan dollar. The 1921 Morgan dollar is quite common and worth melt value (0.77344 oz ASW) unless in very good condition. The 1921 Peace dollar is much rarer and more valuable in any condition.

Thanks for the information. Nice to have a little piece of history. The 1896 is in fairly good shape. It is tarnished and a little worn, but you can still see the laurel crown in the hair. How to best store it?
