Was wondering what everyone thinks of the prices that it is goinf for now, and if is a good investment/ The MS69 is from 400-500, The MS 70 500-600. Would appreciate your thoughts and which grade? Thanks, Jim
Coins are a terrible "investment" tool and I kinda pucker up real tight when someone comes along with a question like "Is this a good investment?" As for the title coin, I'm of the opinion that they are well worth the price since they do represent the first "significant" variety for this bullion Series. Aside from a possible quadrupled die there just are no other varieties! The "investment" aspect of this particular coin died around July of 2008 when existing supplies were depleted since the actual investment amounted to ordering as many 2008-W's as you could afford from the US Mint in hopes of getting one for $25.95. After that, it was simply a joy ride until prices finally setteld to where they are today. Will there be another significant price increase? I don't really believe there will be. The wave has come and gone. So........if you're considering purchasing one of these, get it as cheaply a price as you can find and simply enjoy it for what it is! An interesting die variety. BTW, I have heard of folks still finding these in Dealer Inventory for around $50. No doubt sold by some unknowing collector to an unkowing dealer at melt. I seriously doubt that all 46,000+ coins have been graded and I'm positive that there are folks out there that possess these and simply do not know what they are. The best bet is to understand what to look for and then check out every 2008-W you can get your hands on. You might get lucky! If you find a raw one for a little over melt, then THAT would be a good investment!
I was lucky enough to purchase one of these from the Mint. Its still in the box in my safe.I have never had it grade and probably never will.
