Believe it or not this came from a mintset.

That '53 looks similar to a '43 I recently aquired. I have no history on the coin, other than that I got it pretty cheap from somebody liquidating an estate. My coloration is similar but not as "leopard print" as yours...but close. I posted it on here before and got mixed reviews as far as AT vs NT. Its a weak strike so I will just hang onto it raw as one more "cool coin".

I inherited my grandfather's collection. In it were many sealed boxes of proof and mint sets. They were in the SEALED shipping boxes from the mint. Of course I had to open them...many of the envelopes were at least partially sealed from exposure to moisture over the many years of storage. Found a few nice toners, check out the top row of coins:

Hard to believe that dime got body bagged. I have 39 Roosevelt silver dimes in with NGC right now. 14 under Modern and 25 under Economy. The Modern tier ones are in Quality Control now. Can't wait to see how many they give AT on these.

I haven't studied toning enough to have a clue. But that is one awesome dime !

Help me out guys...I'm new. AT vs NT? I'm guessing the "T" stands for Toning but what does the "A" and "N" stand for?

That is an interesting toning from a mint package. It does look nice but I don't understand why it would be considered NT.

 

Nowadays it is very hard to say how the old double mint sets were packed. I have heard of the plastic sleeves, but I have to admit I'm not sure if I have ever seen them. I do know I have never seen a double set still sealed in it's original envelope. And trying to find one where the coins have not been popped out of the holder at some time is also extremely rare. (And if the coins have been taken out, that means that they could also have been switched.)

 

I can see how It got bagged but man do i want that coin... ive never seen a dime that beautiful...

I have seen original sealed sets or at least a set I thought was original and sealed. The set I saw had cellophane around each of the sleeves.

I've been told that some coin doctors will use a hypodermic needle to inject a gas into the cello to induce toning for the coin in that compartment.

Toning looks original to me all day long Matt. Old mint sets were not protected well, and I saw a lot of toning on them.

So, be honest. How many years ago would it have been and that coin would have gotten a really quick dip before it was ever sent in? 10? 15?

Its great its original, its just mottled toning to me always was detrimental to a coin in my view. I find it hard to judge the surfaces with all of the color changes, and even if its a great coin, its not readily apparent when looking at it.

I know, its just me. All toning is all the rage now.

 

It was a similar cellophane to the older proof sets wrapped around the sleeves and then sealed. I'm not 100% sure it was mint done... I have seen 2 of them tho from 2 different sellers with the exact same cellophane.
