Hi everybody. I'm new to collecting coins, and I just found this board. After acquiring about 10 or 12 coins from various sources, I want to focus some on newer coins. I love the new Silver Dollars the mint makes every year, and I also really like the Silver Proof sets that come out every year. Is it best to buy these directly from the mint's web site, or is there a 3rd party dealer that offers a better price? Thanks in advance for your help! John
I've found that usually the mint is a better way to go. You know for sure what your getting and the price is usually better. But I'm still fairly new to this too. Lots more experience on this site.
I too buy most of my proof sets, commems, state qtrs, American Eagle gold and silver proofs, and other things directly from the mint as available. They have a subscription program which affords the opportunity to sign up to receive various issues as they become available, and it's a really good way to purchase coins IMHO. When I purchase products from dealers, I try to find those who are ANA members and who offer quality products at reasonable prices. This secondary market is necessary for all collectors, because the mint markets several products such as uncirculated silver and gold eagles and other coins only to qualified buyers/dealers who purchase in huge quantities. Since I am one who looks at quality first and price second, reputable dealers are a must for me. Whenever my budget allows I look for dealers with good reps at fair prices, rather than just try to find just the best price. Of course, coins graded by PCGS, NGC, ICG (and sometimes ANACS) are similar in price from most dealers, and graded ones from either of the aforementioned services, IMHO, assure you of quality, genuine specimens. I might also mention that there are some very trustworthy dealers who are members of this forum, and they have given all of us quality advice on many occasions. I hope to use the "Open" forum to list and buy coins in the future, as I am hopeful of finding fair prices from reputable sellers and offering the same to responsible buyers right here on this site.
if it comes from the mint and is available for purchase, get it there. Otherwise you end up paying a premium
I guess the reason why I was asking is that I was reading the post about the new 24k gold coin, and how it was being sold cheaper by a 3rd party company. Is that kind of thing more of the exception than the rule?
:thumb: YEAH! I just got mine from the mint! Tried to last night after midnight, but they didn't have a coin up then. Thilled to be able to get it ordered today!
Go to a dealer---on most of the items you can't get them from the mint....you can only get Proofs most of the time from the mint. Sometimes dealers offer them cheaper--- You can get to know your dealer and make friends and soon he will give you better deals. If you order from the mint you have to pay shipping and such just for a few coins where as a dealer might buy a few hundred sets and so his price would end out to be cheaper than what you pay. Speedy
e-bay - the best best place to buy silver proof set and proof set is from e-bay. sometimes it can be very much cheaper.
