Quarters. Drapped bust. 11 Years on same design. Capped bust. 23 Years on same design. Liberty Seated. 53 Years on same design. Barber. 24 Years on same design. Standing lib. 29 Years on same design. Washington Quarter. 80 Years on Same design(Well the front of it anyway.) Roosevelt dime...66 Years on same design. Jefferson Nickel....74 years on current front design. Get ready... Lincoln Cent....103 Years on the current front design. All of our current cents, nickels, dimes, and quarters, have had the same front design longer than any coin since 1796. While some people are a believer in "if it ain't broke don't fix it", but who else wants to see new designs for the front of these four coins?
I agree, we need to ditch the blah that is presidential busts, but until the people who have the power to change it grow a spine, we may be stuck with the same uninspiring designs until our great, great, great grandchildren are dead and turned to dust. Guy
I couldn't imagine a recent president on any coin. Obama? Bush Jr? Clinton? LOL, nah, Make a coin with a cigar stickin' outta Slick Willie's mouth. I just don't see any of the three mentioned on a coin. Leave the founders of the country on them as they are now. Perhaps different versions of Lincoln, say without the beard, that would be interesting. Put Wilson on the 100.00 note, since he's the one that did this country in with the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. I know there are lots more presidents to choose from. Teddy Roosevelt, Garfield, Harrison etc. Older presidents on new coinage would be a better idea, just not any president in say the last 35 years. Nixon on a quarter or nickel? Nah, then they'd have to have the Watergate Hotel on the reverse.
Another reason harlan berk says that modern coinage are just token money...filled with the faces of.....oh i won't go there.
The point was not to change to any other past, present, or future presidents, but to abandon that horrible idea of presidents on coins all together. There was a reason George Washington felt it was a bad idea. Founding father or not, I agree with his opinions on it. We may not be a country of Einsteins, but I'm sure we could grasp representation without suffering through literal examples instead of figurative examples. We were able to for the majority of our country's existence, so what went wrong? Guy
The Standing Liberty Quarter was issued in December, 1916 and the last year of production was in 1930. Where did you come up with 29 years ? I wish they had resumed the SLQ in 1934 instead of the commemorative Washington Quarter. As I recall reading, there was no act of Congress to discontinue the SLQ, just suspend it for the issuance of the Washington Quarter in 1932.
May I ask what would you put on the coins? Every person on the coins were key to certain parts of your country`s history, well in my opinion and most likely yours too.
I know i'm probably wrong here, but weren't some of the busts designs changed because of the public's disapproval? With that being said, the public throws around change so much and it is constantly being mass-produced, so how even would a fresh face present any numismatic significance value wise down the road.
They already put him on the $100,000 note, what more could he ask for? Any other bill or coin would be an incredible downgrade.
As global payment systems become more and more electronic, the issue of what is on our coins and currency may soon be a moot point. I'm sure the Mint/Congress realizes that also. That's probably why they have been so slow to change things. Yeah......right.
I would say to be careful about what you ask for. The last time somebody campaigned for changes in coin designs they got changes alright - changes to the crappy designs we have now !
Doug, you are hereby appointed to campaign for non-crappy coinage re-designs. The Coin Talk Super PAC will support your endeavors and fund your travels to DC and Vegas. God be with you! Guy
