Is this Unc with bag/planchet marks or AU?

I bought this one at auction so I have no other pics. I also posted this coin previously with a link to the auction but it has disappeared? (the post disappeared, not the coin!)

I think it looks uncirculated with a crappy strike, weak on the left side - the I in 'liberty' is barely readable. Lots of planchet flaws showing thru on the left side as well.

    Anyway, your thoughts?

    Thanks!

Bag and Annealing Chatter is correct. The coin appears to be UNC based upon the photo.

It also "appears" to be a Type 2 which, typically, has a weak L and I in LIBERTY.

I do not recall seeing such a weak stem as whats on the Y though.

There looks to be friction marks on his chin, temple, and cheekbone.

Ike dollars are notorious for having weak strikes and looking like circulated coins with scratches and hairlines, even in mint sets. That is why they are so valuable in high grades.

    Yeah, that looks MS...62-63ish.

Thanks for the replies and the link to my original post.

When I posted it, it said something to the effect of "your post must first be reviewed" and then I could not find it. (???)

Anyway, from what I've seen gbroke is right-on - the majority of the uncirculated Ikes (esp. 1976) look like crap.

    Thanks again, all.

Planchet marks on these coins tend to be near the outer edge, like the coin pictured. That's not to say the coin doesn't have a few nicks on it -- just about all non silver ones do -- but rather they aren't problematic when it comes to a coin being graded mint state or not.

As for if it is MS or not, it's luster (or the lack thereof), not nicks, that will tell you the answer.

The coin appears mint state to me, but I'd really like a better shot of the luster to be sure.

For comparison sake, here's an NGC 65 [type 1]:

Hit up the HA.com archives if you wanna see some high res shots of baggy, high MS ikes. I've got a few I'd swear are 66's looking at some of those pics.

Thanks. It's probably my favorite Ike and it is even prettier in person. Got it from James.
