I am wondering what K-# means in numismatics, where it refers to location of a coin. I kind of think it must be referenced on the clock system but I don't know what K stands for or where to locate a reliable reference that explains this, how it started, etc. Here is an illustration of how it is used:
It refers to the location on the coin in relation to the face of a clock. K-10 would be 10 o'clock and K-8 would be 8 o'clock. (Note that 10 o'clock on the obverse corresponds to 8 o'clock on the reverse.)
It is the Kolit numbering system for describing the position in relation to the face of a clock. It was named after Michael Kolman and Dr. Litman who devised the system in the 1950's. Chris
Basically it's numismatic shorthand The long established ones like that I have no problem with. It's when the kids start making up their own new shorthand terms that I get lost.
I think they sometimes make up incorrect terminology because they're too lazy to spend the time researching the correct terminology.
