Their price is less than $610.00 per coin. Others I've seen are asking $680 to almost $800. There may be better deals somewhere, but I just thought I'd pass this along to anyone interested. You might have to open an account with them first. Here's an e-mail I got from them yesterday:

    Dear Valued Customer,
APMEX.com is pleased to offer you the chance to purchase the new 2006 Gold Buffalo Coins before its official release from the US Mint. Be one of the first to own this unique coin at a special price for pre orders only.
The new 2006 Buffalo Gold coins, will be available in a 1 ounce size and is the first ever .9999 fine gold coin produced by the U.S. Mint. The design will be based on the original Buffalo Nickel created by James Earle Fraser. The obverse (front) will bear the famed Indian Head portrait and the reverse (back) will bear the equally-famed buffalo design.
The coins will come sealed in mylar plastic in strips of twenty and boxes of 500. Currently, we are accepting orders of any size and shipments will be delivered upon receipt from the US Mint. (Estimated to be June 29th) **
Don’t miss out on this special offer available for APMEX customers only! This is the perfect opportunity, with the recent drop in gold prices, to own the first ever .9999 Fine Gold coin produced by the U.S. Mint.

**APMEX reserves the right to ship orders in their entirety, thus additional items purchased in conjunction with this promotion may not be shipped until after JUNE 29, 2006.

Thanks. I ordered mine last night from APMEX. A bit more than I thought it would be due to shipping. They charge shipping 14.95 for orders between $500-$1000. They also add 3 percent to shipping to subtotal price which is about $18 for the $600 coin. Shipping came out about $32 for a total price of about $615 for the coin. This is taking advantage of the 3 percent discount for paying by personal check.

All and all not a bad deal.

Local metal dealer to me has them for $594, though it might be more to ship, etc. Not bad for a pick up price, eh? Of course it's a pre-order so not sure how that would work. I suppose best to wait until they actually come out.

You got a good deal. I just paid $627.63 for mind by check. $612.68 (coin) +$33.33 (shipping/handling) -$18.38 (Cash payment discount) =$627.63. I guess it goes by price of gold at that moment???

That looks to be the case. Price was about $601 for the coin, about 32.50 shipping and about 18.50 for the cash discount for a total of ^615.23 when I bought it last night. By the way welcome!

Also looks like the Mint dropped the price of the Proof coin from $875 to $800.

Proof coins can be purchased from the mint; uncirculated from the dealers. I presume that the proofs are limited to 300,000 but the uncirculated will be whatever the market will bear, but don't take that to the bank.

so only the mint will offer the proofs? you think the dealers will offer the proofs cheaper than the mint? I know thats a dumb question but i didnt know if maybe like apex would offer a better price than the 800 from the mint

for future investment isnt it better to buy a proof one ?

Maybe maybe not. Risky stuff, but I'd guess that it would hold its value at least (just a guess). I think that the proofs will be cooler looking then heck though. In this case the uncs will have higher mintage.

Anyone think the proofs will sell out?

I've heard that the unc's are actually cooler looking. They have a near satiny finish that looks great according to someone I talked to.

When the mint sells out all of the proofs (300.000) they stop and continue to sell only unc. ones right ? I dont know but a first time 24k pure 0.9999 gold coin should not last for long i think :)...

new at this.....so here is my silly question....why would someone buy these from the mint at $800 if there are dealers we can buy they for around $600.

I am missing a piece of the puzzle.....do these dealers get them at wholesale prices......

if you buy them from a dealer, do they come in the same packaging as when you buy one from the US MINT.

This is (more or less) the answer to your question. It's actually two different things. Often you can check the metal dealers for proofs as well, but you have to see what they have. For example...

US PROOF 1 Oz Gold Eagle $750.00

They don't say the year though, I'd have to call them.

By the way, the price on the Gold Buffalo today is $612.00 (up from $594) as gold is up. They'll buy at $599 (should have bought one, eh?) but honestly it's not something I'm that into.

the coins that are $800 are proofs and they are a supposedly limited number, but the business strikes are $600 and available only from dealers.

This irks me..... I mean the position I'm in...

I've never had a gold coin and I really want one or two of each (Proof and UNC), but I can not afford to drop the cash on one of either right now and I've sworn off putting anything other than major Car or Home repairs or maybe medical expenses on the Credit Cards....

I'm trying my best to get out of debt (making good progress) and to stay out of debt!!!

However, I'm also afraid that like the Ben Franklins, people are going to order as many as they can and sit on them till sold out then double the price and sell them off at double or better markup... Then the prices will drop again to what they are really worth...

I'm trying to decide if I want to get a proof. But if up to 300,000 are going to be made, thats too many. I'm thinking maybe a third of that might be made and sold. Decisions decisions...
