Looks like over grade to me, but I am not a n. g. c . grader maybe Doug will see this he is good at this.

This looks like a case where you're buying the " Collection " name and not the coin. No way this coin is XF45. Maybe Jules Reiver thought otherwise and probably gave NGC a little incentive.

'sniff' I don't see the Xf-45 I'd call it a f-12 and the other 33 points were given for pedigree.

I mean NGC and PCGS get all hyped up when they see famous/ infamous collections needing to be slabbed, and they go wild with the grades. It makes both parties look better, but it really comes back and haunts the coin grading co.

    Maybe F-15 MAX.

I think that coin would grade a vf-35 without too much trouble.

Also, might I add that I don't think pedigrees result in higher grades, as graders are not allowed to know who's coins they are grading. The exception to this would be something like an 1804 silver dollar where the owner is well known, and the coin is relatively unique.

Then this should grade at least VF-35 :D

This is the 5th finest know piece of this particular die variety. The finest known is MS60 (which is probably a ratty looking AU, technically), so this is an obvious case of market grading. The market values this very nice (for the variety) coin much higher than it would be valued if it was a different die marriage. I'm not a fan of market grading, but this is clearly what happened here.

I don't feel like trying to attribute it right now, what is your attribution? If it is a more common marriage to be found in high grade, then this is an apples to oranges problem, if it is a 116 then it might get a grade bump depending on how many are in a similar condition.

I think you coin would grade a vg-10 bone. Keep in mind, I am by no means an expert.

That's about what I paid for it a few months ago. I think I paid F-12 cash for it then. Thanks for taking a look :)

I agree that the coin is overgraded, however the coin has excellent detail on the reverse, and it's quite obvoius that this coin was weakly struck. What the right grade is, I don't know. I do think it would grade a high vf though.
