I agree, I think it most likely that the tape job was sloppy or that it fell out when they opened the package and did not notice it.
But in todays world you never know.

However, they are more scrutinizing since the Patriot Act, and do it more now than they did prior to that act.

gboulton, thanks for the info. I don't need it now, but who knows in the future. It does pay to know what to do. And for the OP, it may turn out that that coin is found and cataloged as unclaimed at the station that checked the package. In that case, you may eventually get the coin.

I believe that is a rather Naive statement "vote for the right people". Unfortunately our government is now a form of anarchy where the business controls government. Big contributors sow the seeds both directions. Since getting elected to any position requires huge sums of money, all politicians are beholden to their contributors. Republican, Democrat, Communist Party, etc. the workings in D.C are beyond those lines. Your vote does send a message to the sponsors, but that's about all. Most politicians react the way they do out of necessity, not desire. IMHO

    Just sayin'

I wonder, if since it was not a Canadian coin, that there might not have been some customs issue ? I mean, a Swiss coin had to be imported into Canada, so maybe at some point it became illegal to export it to the USA ?

    Just askin'

I think your coin is gone for good, but you have to make the effort to file a claim so that statistics can be more accurate. It's the only way to prevent this kind of thing from becoming a common occurrence. I'm truly sorry for your loss though. Have you considered writing to some of the more eccentric as well... (ie: the Alex Jones conspiracy types)... Again, my thought is that it might just bring attention to the existing problem so that there's a little more oversight on the process.

If it doesn't apply to packages across the border fine but only problem is we, original poster, or anyone knows when the coin came out if it was delivered via usps, ups, dhl or anyone they still may have taken advantage of the situation saw it wasn't seal properly and helped themselves. Maybe it's just my nature but I would still complain to anyone and everyone who would listen and hopefully do something or see if insurance was purchased or there is any policies or something in place to help get at least the money back.

Did you look inside your mailbox to see if the coin might have fallen out in there?

    Wow, what an exceptional seller!

I ordered another coin from him, an 1899 British Farthing, and he sent me a message saying that he was shipping me some other coins with it to make up for the one lost in the mail and that unfortunately he didn't have another 1897 rappen to send me. I was not expecting this at all.

I received the coins in the mail today, and wow I am quite surprised!

    There's the following:
1899 British Farthing (that I ordered)
    1918 British Farthing (VF condition)
1919 Switzerland Rappen (RB, in excellent condition)
1928 Canada 5 cents (in VF condition)
    1931 Canada 1 cent
    1932 Canada 1 cent
    1935 Canada 1 cent
1936 British West Africa penny (in VF-XF condition)

Very nice guy. I'm glad there are still such decent people in the world.

I should also note that I have no coins like those he gave me in my collection, so that's a double bonus :)

I would post who the seller is. I would be glad to add such a fine seller to my list that I look through.
