Well folks the 1846 Large cent was taken to Baltimore for the opinion of Anacs. A recut or repunched 1 and 8 is the initial opinion, with class 3 doubling on the 4 and 6. The opinion offered by cdcda that two different size dates were used (large date repunched with small date) was passed along and was considered one plausible explanation by the Anacs grader. The coin was then shown to many different dealers on the floor and compared to a handful of coins with the same date. No matching referrence has been found yet. The coin is still being researched. At some point some explanation will have to be found, or a new varity listed. One or the other. When this is resolved one way or the other, I will make an annoucement for those of you that have been interested. Here is the original thread concerning the coin: 1846 Large Cent Thread
That they did not know. They did not have many referrence books with them. They did take photos and will get back to me after they go through their files.
