I need a little help from some of the members here. In the last year or two I have been buying Spanish and Mexican Reales, all types, half reale ,1 reale,2 reales, and 8 reales. I bought a new pair of digital scales and have been weighing some of my better coins and ran into an Ebay purchase, 1 (1839 ZsOM MEXICO 8 REALES Cap & Rays) that is SUSPECT (underweight). From what I read most Spanish and Mexican 8 reales should weigh around 26.85 to 27. grams. This particular coin weighs 25.16 on 2 different scales. Does it sound like it might be Fake? Any help will be appreciated! Thanks, Frank
Try and get as close and clear as you can so I can the details. But based on the weight, I don't hold out much hope
Compare the reverse of the coin in question to this 8 reales from 1833. Look carefully and they look very different. Unless Mexico altered the design within that 6 year period, I'd say yours is a fake 100% Frankallen. -Sorry
Nos....I have another 1839 That I know is Authentic and it has the same reverse as the Fake,so they must have changed the Reverse during those 6 years. Roy....Your description, of the mushy denticles, makes alot of sense now that I notice it!! I checked my other Mexican 8 Reales and the Denticles are not that big and Mushy,as you describe it. I believe this is the only fake I have, as far as my Mexican 8 Reales go. I think it will be harder the next time for someone to pass a Fake Mexican 8 Reales, on to me.Thank You Roy !! Thanks to Everyone else for the help!! I also believe it's Fake..!! Frank
Unless you did already, give the guy negative feedback! As for it being fake, it's definate by looks and weight. But the rest of the guys (and girls) here at CoinTalk are a whole lot better than me at this.
Wait a minute now. It is possible the seller did not know it was fake either. Frank didn't get suspicious until he put it on the scale. Will you post a link to the auction Frank so we may see the experience of this seller?
Nos....Like you said, the dealer might not have known it was a Fake, so I rather not disclose this Information. I will give him the benefit of the doubt. Frank
Well that's also how shady dealers get away with it. Buyers don't wanna report the sellers to the coin community so if infact the seller knew it was fake, they can keep getting away with it and keep swindling unsuspecting buyers.
I think I let everyone see my "Fake" so I feel like I helped to the Community to be aware of them!! Frank
