I'm considering buying this raw quarter (sale priced at about $270) for my top set, but I think it will grade "details" which has lessened my interest (currently I have a decent 1924S in an ANACS slab graded VF20 in this slot). While they produced 2,860,000 at San Francisco in 1924, they didn't change the design to protect the date until 1925 - so a lot of these are "no date" type 2 SLQs and Red Book lists them at $850 in MS63 ($225 in AU50). The market seems to be pricing them higher from what I'm seeing. My goal is to move my top set into all slabbed graded AU or MS coins (with straight grades except the 1916 and 1918/7-S overdate). My current 1924 is in a PCGS slab graded AU55 and my 1924-D is in an ICG slab graded AU53. The current VF20 is a notable weakness in my collection and I think this one would probably grade low AU or high XF but again, I'm thinking it's a details coin as these appear more serious to me than "bag marks" or incidental to circulation. I'd appreciate any thoughts / input & Happy New Year all!
VF20 is nothing to sneeze at. The market for the Standing Liberty fluctuates so I would watch for the price is right and be happy with your VF20 until then. Patience is your winner. Good luck and thanks for sharing.
$270 is allot to spend on a 'maybe'. I understand that you want the best collection you can get, but patience really is a virtue. I swear PCGS is using microscopes!! If it's not possible for you to have a professional look at the coin, then your one in hand is probably a keeper. It is a pretty coin that is soon to be 100 yrs. old, however...
Details, scratched at a minimum. Just my opinion from other similar coins I've seen. Still, a nice coin if you could work down the price a bit.
@MIGuy I see Details, Cleaned as well. Go with your gut instinct. Beneath the D under IN GOD there's a lot of hairlines. Between the olive branch and Liberty's neck those scratches are very suspect. On the rev. above the eagles tail feathers there's a lot of parallel hairlines that beg the cleaning question. All told I would expect a Details entombed coin to be returned.
Thank you all, this was precisely the input I was looking for - @masterswimmer and the rest of you, I appreciate it! I'm taking this one off the table.
It looks like it’s was cleaned with an abrasive substance long ago. It will not get a straight grade. I would pass and wait for something better.
I got a 1924 Walking Liberty Half Dollar about a year ago for about $75. It was graded my NGC MS61. I checked out NGC's estimate of value and it was $185. Take a pass. There are still some good ones out there. Best of luck.
Double Whoops! I've got too many fires going on. It is a Standing Liberty, yours and mine. I apologize.
While it's not absolutely horrible looking, I'd pass on that one. Even without taking the cleaning into account, there's that knife wound where Liberty got slashed across the thigh above her right knee. ^ I agree with the post above. That scratch is the primary dealbreaker here for me.
