My 6 year old sun is always nagging around my head when i am busy with my coins. He always wants to hold them look at them,... Dont get me wrong, i like the fact that he is intrested in coin's, but i dont like him to fondle wioth my coins, because 85% of the time he "forgets" to hold the coins by the rim, and stuff like that So what would be a good collecting start for a 6 year old so he can have his own collection and does not need to touch mine (and that its no harm that he drops one sometimes or hold it wrong )
Maybe pick up a few rolls of quarters and have him try to get a collection of state quarters. I remember absolutely loving finding different states with no regard to quality as a little kid. Something simple and cheap that will probably give him just as much fun as collecting silver until he's older. Another thought is wheat pennies.
Oops- didn't see your location, another thought would be to do something along the lines of finding as many years of the same coin as possible, starting out with his birthday. As a kid I remember not really caring about the coins so much, just the thrill of finding different things.
I would look for some big mexican coinage. The un pesos are a start and the newer ones are a dime a dozen.
my son is 2 1/2 years old now, I have local change every where and he likes to play with them [some would say it is dangerous but my boy does not like putting things in his mouth so it is ok], when he gets older I will get him few pounds of mixed world coins, I hope that they will teach him about geography.
To tell you the truth, the only way kids / people learn is by making mistakes. Take any inexpensive coins and let your kid play around with it. Let him touch them and examine it. To them this is whats fun, after all you want them to enjoy it to so the both of you can enjoy the hobby together.
Yeah get him his own collection going. Id get mostly cheaper stuff for him to look at. But I might also add in a couple nice things. Maybe like a silver eagle and something slabbed so he feels like he has a valuable collection too. This can also teach him that not all coins are the same, value wise. Maybe get him a brand new Lincoln cent that has full luster and show him how to handle it so the luster doesnt go away. Find out what his favorite coins are, then go to a show and get some. He may have them the rest of his life. Ive got a 82 PF Washington commem. Half that my dad got me in the 80s when I was probably 7 years old. Ive bought them since but that one cant be replaced. My son is 8 but started to really get into coins just shy of 6. He's actually the one that got me into coins. I have no problem buying him coins that he can touch, bang around, toss in the air etc. He also has coins that I've bought for him that are in 2x2s and in an album. He knows that he can't play around with them and can only look at them. My opinion is to buy a bunch of coins that don't have much value or have little value over the metal value (pre-65 US silver if you can get your hands on it) and let him do whatever he wants. My son loves to take out big silver dollars and toss them around and stack them up. They're only worth melt so I have no issues with that. Whatever you get him, I would make sure it was something he could play with
A small sack of world coins may be of interest to him. Most have animals on them that kids like to look at. Get him started on collecting the different animals and that will keep him busy. You could even take him to coin shows and let him go through the bargain bins. Inexpensive and entertaining.
Get him a bunch of different coins from around the world, some shiny and new, others old and worn. Some of my favorite coins I had when I was younger were coins from around the world. I wish I still had them now.
In Belgium are there books which you can get for smaller denomination coinage like this; http://www.ebay.ca/itm/WHITMAN-Canada-Small-Cents-1989-Date-Folder-Album-2480-/390393301356?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ae541096c#ht_4618wt_1153 Maybe you can help him get interest in his own collection ~ starting with the smaller denomination Euro-cent's? I recently bought my nephew a book like this for Canadian pennies ~ and he loves it.
I suggest getting him some coins of his own. When my grandaughter showed interest in my coins, she was 3. I gave her some Ikes, she was amazed by the size of them as well as halves. She also loves the folders I got her, wheat pennys and Jefferson nickels. I also let her play with some junk silver of mine. She is almost 5 now,and she can pick the silver out of a handful of coins! I enjoy collecting now more than ever thanks to her.:smile. Enjoy collecting with your son,and feel free to pm me with your info, and ill send you a couple of "cool" coins to help get him started.--Dennis
I'd buy him a state quarter map and/or 1998-present nickel folder and let him look through your change after you go shopping. That's how I got into coin collecting
well i dont thing i will get much state quarters or nickels in my change as we can not pay with American curency here in Belgium Thank you all for the tips. I do seem a bit sceptic tough about letting him "play" with silver coins (altough he will have to learn to handle them to when he wants to collect.
koen, there are many advertisers in world coin magazines that sell bag lots of coins. Typically, they are circulated relatively common stuff, but interesting and varied. You won't have to worry if he handles the coins as they are inexpensive and it may spark an interest in coins of a particular country or type. When my girls were little, we started collecting coins that had animals on them. Buffalo nickels, Canadian polar bears, etc. and although the coin collecting bug never really stuck with them, we shared hours of fun together!
