Hi all, Have an 1809 half cent and it seems that the top part of the second "T" in STATES is missing, so I thought I would show it here and see what everyone else thinks. Was also wondering what you all think the grade might be. Thanks, Pat
As for the T not sure, not too versed in half cent varieties, if that is one, in fact, and it looks scratched or cleaned on the reverse especially above the word "HALF" and the obverse looks severely scratched and/or pitted as well.
Hi dsmith23, The coin to my knowledge has never been cleaned I did use a photo enhanser to brighten it up let me see if I can send a different pic
Well, unless you've owned the coin since 1809, I wouldn't worry about you being the one who "cleaned" it. Many coins have been cleaned previously, and when people comment about it, it's usually because of what they are seeing in the pictures. Regardless, the top of the T may either have wear or some die issue, or it could be that something has worn away the edges. I can see the top and the Crossbar of the T, where it is, although faint. But I'm not an expert on half cents, so you will need to have someone else chime in to say what's going on with that coin. Good luck, and welcome to CT!
Hi Kaia, Thanks for your welcome and opinion. I too am no expert on the half cent. I would have thought that the T would be as pronounced as the first T which led me to belive it may be an error. As far as owning the coin since 1809, Wonder what I'd look like after 203 years (probubly alot worse than the half cent Thanks, Pat
You appear to have an 1809/6 C-5 half cent. The second T was punched in a little high and some times tends to fade at the top in late die states.
