pumpkinpie what is this I don*t even

When I was just a little squirt (a long, long, time ago, I'm 6'1" now), I periodically asked my dad about silver coins. He let me look through his inherited silver, and I was hooked. We went to the coin store (my first time there!) and with my $20 spending limit, I asked my dad to help me put the 1/2 price bin on the floor, and I searched through it. I left the coin store with a IHC, a silver quarter, and a few Buffalo Nickels.

what up Cman....chris here....i don't what you consider to be young but at 30 years of age and no kids i still feel young.....i have been collecting for about two years so if that counts here goes. I have always collected (my girlfriend says hoarded) random things during my life from rocks, to basketball cards, to comic books and have always talked about starting a coin collection. I never did break the ice on that until my girlfriend brought me home a buffalo nickel from work because she loves them and thought that i could use it to start my collection. I looked it up and found out that it was a 1931s nickel in extremely good shape considering she found it in the register at work and is also one of the rarer buffalo's out there. I took that as a sign and popped on down to my local coin shop the next day and picked up a red book and a couple coins and the rest is history. This isn't the best story out there i'm sure but its real and it is what it is. I also love the walking liberty's and recently bought nice 1917 s obverse.....so there is my story...happy early birthday homie, i'm off to dominate my fantasy baseball draft!

My favorite series is Wheat pennies! I am a newer collector.I started in July 2011. On My 13th birthday I started when I found my dads collectionof a few wheat pennies and they really sparked something in me. So now I’m into wheat pennies and starting other collections of coins.

"In 1909, a new one centcoin design was commissioned by the United States Mint. The new copper coindesign was the new Lincoln Cent, intended as a tribute to the 100th anniversaryof the birth of our 16th President.
With Lincoln'sprofile on the front and the circular wheat stalks on the back, what is nowknown and the “wheat penny” was born." by: http://www.pennies.com/facts.aspx

Now as many people know wheatpennies are not worth much but, some are worth a lot of money not many only afew. The ones that are worth a lot of money are the low mintage ones, or missprints. Some of the rarest wheat back pennies are 1909-S V.D.B. (picture 1) whichis worth upwards $1,000. Only 484,000 were minted the number 484,000 seems likea lot but, in coins that is almost nothing. Because now in days there are around1 billion pennies minted a year. The next most rarest wheat penny is the 1922(no d)(picture 2) which is worth around $600 to $1,000 I really do not know howmany were minted but there still is many of them. Another, Maybe the most valuablewheat penny is the 1943 (copper cent) (picture 3) worth up to $1,000,000(1943-d copper).

Now you know more on wheatpennies, to me it’s not what they’re worth. I plan on collecting for my wholelife and passing it on to my kids. Coin collecting is a fun hobby, but I think that pennies are one of the most fun coins to collect over all. Thank you forreading and good luck to everyone. ---Tyler k[IMG]

I'm 25 and have been 'seriously' collecting coins for maybe a year and a half. As a kid I saved the "shiney" coins, but then as I got a bit older video games, cars, and girls over shadowed coins.

About a year and a half ago I was talking with my boss, who is a numismatist. He really got me looking at coins. He found a silver quarter in the till one day and then I just knew I had to start looking. Initially I was a silver bug. Just looking for the metals...but then the coin collector in me started to grow.

It really took off when my grandmother came up to visit me. I had been telling her about my collecting of coins and how much I was learning. She was up from San Diego with my great grandmother for the ANA show in Sacramento. She drove the 2 hours to Chico to come see me, and she was bearing gifts! My great grandmother and given my grammy to give to me a whole bunch of coins! One of each denomination! There was an 1890 Morgan, an 1963 Franklin, a BU 1954-S WQD, a 1959 Roosie BU, a 1974S Lincoln proof, and an 1863 IHC. She also gave me my first Red Book. Series 2011. I was officially hooked, and there was no getting around it.

My favorite coin belongs to my favorite coin series. The Washington Quarter Dollar. I will be the first to admit that the WQD is not the most beautiful coin we have ever produced, or the most interesting...but it is my own personal history that really makes the coin my favorite. See, when I was kid growing up in the mid to late 90s the quarter was the coin of choice. That was the coin you hunted you couch, car floor, bedroom, ground, everywhere to find. Why? Because back then there were still arcades, there were still 25c candy bars, and the quarter vending machines had cool toys back then. Also, for about 55 cents you could snag yourself a Pepsi! Now that I mean a collector I look at the WQD in a totally different light...but this is STILL the coin from my childhood. I could have never guessed as a kid that the WQD used to be silver, or that they have been made since 1932 only (I never really knew of any other quarters besides that until about 2 years ago.)

Now then, my favorite coin in my entire collection is one I just got earlier this week. A 1932-D WQD. It only has a mintage of 436,800 pieces. It is the king of the WQD series, which is my favorite series. It is also the king of my collection! Also, something that just BLOWS my mind is this: I think there is something like 260 million people in the United States...that means that if I did my math correctly, only one in every 595 people get to own one of these coins. THAT is crazy. That is FAR less than 1% of Americans. That is like .0016% or something!

Thank you for listening, or reading rather, my story!

Dont know if you consider me as a young person or as a new collector :p

But if you do, here is my story:

When i was about 10 years old i collected Belgium stamps.
When my grandfather (who also was a stamp collector) passed away, i got his collection to.
It had some old Belgian stamps in, the oldest was one from in the 1860's
About 15 years ago there was a fire in the house where i lived, wich destroyed the whole collection.
I always wanted to start a new collecton but it never had a good start.

A few moths ago i was looking for some information about hobby's for a website i started (a dutch forum about hobby's) and i came across some sites about collecting stamps and collecting coins.
At first it gave me a small boost to start collecting stamps again, but then i saw some realy beautiful coins on the internet and i became more intrested in coins.
Then i got on this forum to search some info about US coins (for some reason i like US coins more then other coins :p ), and i recieved some pm's from people who wanted to help me to start my collection.

With looking for info about coins, i also came across info about tokens, so now i also started a small collection of US Transit tokens, and i got into US paper money to.

At this moment my collection exists out

155 coins, 15 notes and 12 tokens

My favorite coin at this moment (i like them all verry much, but there is always a favorite) is the 1923 Peace Dollar.
There is something about the design of that coin that always makes me smile when i look at it.
Dont ask me wath makes me smile about it, because i cant even answer that, but i like it verry much.

I got into collecting this last year but remember looking at old walking liberty halves in my grandpas collection when I was young. I started bankroll hunting and buying this last March/April and have become addicted...And this is coming from someone who doesn't have an addictive personality either! I enjoy the coins, their value, their historical significance, artistic merit and rarity/scarcity. I have always loved treasure hunting and receive a lot of enjoyment from being able to discover my own treasure.

My favorite coins so far is the 1914 $2.50 quarter eagle pictured above. I purchased a collection for $75 and this coin was hidden in the collection.

My second favorite coin design is the Balboa coins of Panama.

I am certainly not young, but I am an infant when it comes to coin collecting!

When I was younger my Dad and I used to always go metal detecting. He would detect and I would dig(and I thought I was the lucky one in that partnership!) We found lots of coins, but none really worth centering a collection around. Those were good times!

So a few months ago I decided to get a detector and start up with my kids. We are having a blast doing it and we have been fortunate to find some old merc dimes! We do this along with geo-caching on the weekends and we have had a ball so far! I want my oldest son(12) to start collecting with me so I am easing him into it, so far so good. I want to build an impressive collection and one day turn it over to him.

My favorite coin right now would be the 1882 Morgan that my Grandfather gave me as the center point of a Bolo-tie. He is a cowboy in every sense of the word and he knew I was following in his footsteps. I keep it in the tie and wear it every once in a while to remind me of the good times!

Thanks for the thread!
