I have been busy with the ANA Grading Stabndards book, and i would like to know if my findings are right. I carefully went over all teh aspects of my Indian Head Cents and tried to grade them using the book. What do you guys think? Did i do a good job or not ? VG10 G08 FR02 VG08
from the pics i would agree with you. Im teaching myself to grade like that as well. Buying a roll of cents and grading all of them
i am glad you think like me I find it a bit hard to grade with the ANA book. That and the fact that i always need confirmation to know if it is good or not (not only with grading, but in real life to).(i am kind of insecure if that is the right word)
in my opinion, the first 5 are all problem coins, and they are over-graded. the scratch on #1 is way too distracting to get vg. the others have verdigris and/or pitting, and that lowers grades. #6 i agree with. but, don't take my opinion, as i tend to "net grade," which is an early copper way of grading. others who have better knowledge of market grading will comment, and you should value their opinion more than mine.
i use the redbook wear standards and PCGS Photograde to check. The photograde gives you a good aspect of what that grade should look like
This may help - Richard Snow is a recognized expert on Indian Heads. I wish there was a color version. http://www.indiancent.com/grading.pdf
