It is possible to find a 40% silver '71 half dollar but I know they are quite rare. The weight of the 40% is 11.5 g with a tolerance of +/- 0.4 g. your coins are within those parameters but having them tested is the only sure fire way to tell. Did you try the tissue test with a common clad half and one of these coins? lay a piece of tissue paper over both coins, if one is actually silver, it will show a considerable lighter color telegraphing through the paper.

This is one which was sold by Heritage a good while ago.

Circulated silver clad coinage can be easily distinguished from its nickel clad counter part by looking at the edge of the coin. The silver cladding tends to darken the exposed copper core and leaves it looking a darker grey color compared to a normal nickel copper clad.

The Silver will show noticeably lighter.

Pam after double checking the weight of a clad Half dollar. These are supposed to weigh 11.34 grams with a tolerance of 0.454 grams. Try the tissue test but the weight and evidence of copper clad on the third side are a give away.

Thank you. It really does not matter… either way I’m keeping them. Just don’t understand the weight, sound of silver. I worked at a bank for yearsss lol.. maybe my ears are playing tricks. Lol. And eyes. It’s hard to do through photos. If I trusted places around here I would take it in by curiosity but nah! Thanks again!

Wouldn't that add to the weight?
A 40% silver half is at least 11.5? if I recall correctly and 12.5? For 90%.
These weigh in at clad (no silver)

I have a 1776-1976-S bicentennial quarter in a slab that is supposed to be silver. People question it.
Tried the tissue paper test with no conclusive results and weighing it don't work either.

I have 64s, 67s etc JFKs and Morgan’s etc but I guess I was thinking it was 40% it would show differently. But after reading more I understand clad verses silver. Ty!
