I found this in a junk box I bought. Can anyone tell based on features what the date is? If not, guess this is guess the date contest. I know my guess, but I'll leave it to you all to have an unbiased guess.
_____________________^^________________________ I'd go with what Condor101 says. I can see the 179 of the date, with the last digit not clear to me, but I am no expert on this type of coin.
A. How long did that take you. B. What is the attribution point(s) you are using, just curious? 1795 are liberty caps which this is not.
Thanks for all the replies. Based on what I can see, I was guessing either 1796 or 1798. I can see the 179 and the last digit is something rounded on the bottom, either a 6 or an 8. I'd love to know attribution points as well so that I can be confident that it really is a 1798..
It doesn't show real clearly but you can see traces of the crack especially through the E and upper part of the wreath. Doesn't really show through the fraction, at least not in the picture.

I like the coin in theory. But....it is awfully ugly. I've already got two other coins in this series that are just about as ugly (1796 and 1800). that 1796 is my only US coin from the 1700s so I'm tempted. I'd guess I'd get about $20 or less on ebay for it. However, I'm a total coin collector. The US is just another country in my world collection. For $20 I could get a handful of other world coins from the 1700s, 1600s, or even 1500s.
You have a 1796 draped bust? That's somewhat impressive. You don't see the 96 busts too often and most of the die combinations for that year are scarce or rare. i've never understood the scarcity of the 96 busts. The mintage was three times that of the 96 caps, but you will see 10 caps for every bust you see.
