Package arrived today from Leroy Van Allen. Made two new Morgan VAM discoveries, and he verified the attribution on a strange 1883-O. The 83-O has high and low areas on the reverse caused by excessive buffing of the die.

Great I just sold an 1883O. Don't think it was a VAM thought. God I hope not! :desk:

Really? Didn't know that. So each year and mint has its own VAM?

Some years and mint marks have multiple VAM. Vams stands for Van Allen and Miller who documented the various dies used to strike Morgan Dollars. Some of the die marriages are worth huge premiums.

Oh, Ok. I thought there were just some years that had VAMs, and I do know that some are worth a lot. I happen to have an 1888O Vam 4, but its in pretty bad condition. Thanks for the info!

Way to go nesvt :high5: That's quite a few new discoveries for you now - have they listed you yet in the VAM Hall of Fame ??

Ya know---I think they are going to have to take the M out of VAM and change that to N that way Nesvt fits in there....from now on they should be VANS.

They are ALL VAMs - it's just a question of which VAM it is.

Thanks everyone! I'm a small player in this game. I started doing it just to identify the variety of each coin. The same as you might do with Breen numbers. Now I'm hooked.

or Van Allen and Mallis.... though Mallis has passed on and Van Allen is making the new designations on his own. Not sure who will take over in the future. I know there are specific people CC'd on the letters received from Leroy Van Allen.

What am I? A sneaker? Don't they make footwear?

Thanks GD. I don't think they keep that list up to date. I don't want the fame... I just want to find a rare known VAM that someone will pay big bucks for! I've got some kids that want to go to college!
I'm up to a couple dozen. However, there are a couple of serious collectors that seem to make new discoveries every month.

Oops. Lol, I meant Mallis. For some reason I always say Miller. Congrats on the finds Nevst!
