These four coins are currently for sale at $1,725. If you had to choose one or two which one(s) would you pick and why?

Can't see them well enough to answer really, can't even tell what date the Saint is. But based on what you have I'd take the 2 on the left because I like Saints better than Libs and that Lib is in better shape than the other two.

But if it were me, and I really wanted one of those two coins for my collection, I'd save my money and buy one where its value was based on its numismatic attributes instead of the gold content.

I've wanted a Saint for a long time, and if I had a chance to buy one at spot, I'd jump. Heck, even the most worn one is a good deal at that price.

I believe the Saint is a 1898. I will double check though.

Yeah, I agree, as long as the spot price of gold holds here or climbs. But what if it doesn't ?

My point is you have a better chance of relying on numismatic value holding or at least recovering at some point in time than you do depending on the spot price of gold.

Sure you can lose, or win, either way. But I prefer the odds to be in my favor when possible.

    A Good Buy!!

I'd inform the seller that he has a buyer for the upper left coin. Probably a 1904-P or possibly a 1907-P, and I'd be ecstatic if it was any other date/mint-mark.

I'd "jump" on this deal!! Nice choices, Rich

Looks like an '03 to me. But priced as it is, I suspect there is something about it.

    Rich,

The upper left appears to be a 1903.edited

I have tried to stick to bullion pricing with my purchases BUT I don't have a problem jumping into a coin, especially a gold coin, that is graded and has some numismatic value as I understand it will help with the up and downs of the price. If you were to "save" which gold coin would you target? What grade and price?

It would take some study, and some looking, to figure it out.

If it is I'd run away fast. :)

The Saints didn't start til 1907.

My bad, it was a 1909 Saint. I picked up the Saint and the 1904 for $1,705 each. The 1904 was less beat up in my opinion compared to the 1903. I will post pictures once they load.

But, as so many people have told us in so many threads, gold will always go up! And it's a store of value, and it's not not not "just" a commodity, and banks, and, and, and... :)

I couldn't agree more, on both counts. But, based on what I've seen, finding Saints or even Liberty double eagles at melt is a pretty rare opportunity.

Unh huh - and the climate of the earth changing is all man's fault, even though the climate changed a hundred times before man ever even existed.

Actually it's a pretty common, very common even, opportunity. I can find you as many as you want that will be priced no higher than a bullion bar.
