Got this Ike today in the mail and i was just wondering what kind of grade it is in??? the smudge of stuff near the bottom left star was on the coin in the original mint packaging and is why i took it out, what is it???? im sure it would wipe away with microfiber cloth but just wanted some opinions on what to do about getting it off?
Whatever you do, don't wipe it with anything, you'll destroy whatever value it does have which is probably about the $10 range since it's a proof. I'd say PF63 or 64 from the pics, I have a hard time grading proofs, they all look alike to me.
Okay, so add like $5 or so. You got a Proof 40% Ike, if you're expecting a million dollar coin, well, you don't have one. This coin is not that special and you can easily find these at any coin dealer, pawn shop or online for probably the $15-$20 range. Also, don't double post and be patient, we don't need you updating your thread with "Anyone?" every 30 minutes.
It's not a proof rodeo It's a 40% silver uncirculated. To the OP: rodeo is right about being more patient about getting responses from the forum. The other thread you started last night in the other section, was what I consider to be a late time and most are not perusing the forum then. One thread for the same subject is really all that's needed. You could have, in the meantime, searched eBay completed listings, to see what others like this one are selling for. As I stated on the other thread, the highest BIN is $17.50, the lowest was $16.
Correct on all points! Other correct points. DO NOT "wipe" anything on or off of this coin even though it's not a proof, you'll still screw up the luster. At MOST, you could try pure acetone. Follow the procedure given in this site.....sorry I don't have a link, but it's a three step procedure that involves two acetone dips and a final distilled water dip.
Ah, true. That's me fingers doing the typing and not me mind. I was thinking proof until he mentioned it was the 40% silver.
Hello Coinguy Matthew, I believe that I see some contact marks on Ike's jaw and also on his neck. Those contact marks might make the coin a MS63. I'm assuming that the coin is atractive in hand.
The coin is NOT a proof. Its a 40% Silver Blue Pack Business strike which initially sold to collectors for about $3.00 each. The coin itself has very nice fields and what appears to be extrordinary lister. BUT, thats a nasty looking blemish on IKE's jaw which draws the eye of most IKE Collectors and graders. IMO, the coin would grade MS66. MS67 if you got lucky.
I believe that the coin would grade MS-66. It's a very average blue envelope Ike (40% UNC) and these coins saw very little handling. This is a cleanly struck and nice example. Unfortunately, it's pretty common to find them this way, so it's not worth much, but it's a nice example of the coin and is one that you can use for design study.
Oh. Well excuse me. I didn't realize whom I was talking to. You, who cannot tell the difference between a proof and a business strike or the OP who was asking for an opinion from someone who actually knows?
