The price is $75, or best offer but like I said, I don't have a Krause book for this period yet so Value or approximation would help much. One of my dream coins is the gold version or close facsimilie of this but with a very low mintage, it's doubtful I'll ever have the gold one. Also a close relative to the Japanese trade dollar of the period. This coin is year 31, so it is by far the most plentiful with a mintage of around 22 Million. Does it appear cleaned? I really suck at that determination without the coin in hand. The coin is offered by one of my few trusted dealers on eBay.
That helps alot! TYVM. I think I'll offer $60 since he has free shipping. I know the surfaces aren't untouched, but I don't see many on the market & I know I can live with the looks.
Was informed the hairlines on the coin are die polishing marks, guess I'll have to wait to see it in hand when I receive it on Saturday.
The Japanese Numismatic Dealers Assn. catalog shows two varieties, with slightly different endings on the left side of the reverse bottom ribbon. This one appears to be the less valuable one. The JNDA catalog doesn't show the mintage breakdown between the varieties, which also exist for four other years. In the 2012 edition the valuations for the second highest grade (roughly equal to AU or XF) are 50,000 Yen (~$623) and 23,000 Yen (~$287). Since my experience is that the JNDA valuations are more accurate than those in Krause, all I can say is congratulations on a great deal, even if it turns out to be cleaned.
