Greetings! I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but it seems to fit. I found this dime in my coin jar recently & it has me somewhat baffled. After viewing some examples of error coins I am fairly certain that this didn't leave the mint in this condition. So what is it? Has anyone seen something like this before? I apologize for the quality of the pics. As you can see, photography isn't exactly a hobby of mine either. Thanks for looking, Dan.
To me, it appears as if someone cut a circle of metal out of that dime, flipped it over and reinserted it. I'd bet a buck that with a little bit of pressure, you could pop that "plug" right out of that piece. It appears to have been inserted from the reverse, so put a little pressure on it from the obverse.
Well, I tried to pop it out, but it is jammed in there pretty tight. It's probably going to take a punch & hammer to knock it out. I Think I will just leave it the way it is.
Some people just like to mess around with things like this, and I would be willing to bet that it was done by either a collector or someone familiar with minting operations. These were produced by a retired Philly Mint employee....... Chris
