State Quarter Question

Typically you can see the copper center of a quarter viewing the edge. I have this Louisiana state quarter that shows no sign of copper on the edge. I've weighed it a 5.7 grams which is about right for a state quarter. It's not a silver proof planchet for that should weigh 6.25 grams or pre '65 standards according to my Red Book. Don't know if the photos do it justice but they follow.
My question: Should I keep it or use it to help buy my next six pack?

Maybe its silver layered. Don't know if that would add any weight to it. Or platinum layered. I just went hrough my clad states and didn't find any like that. But my layered ones were. But I don't have a scale.

  4. Hey bennypenny,

Try this link to a past post. I too have found several like this as well. If you do not feel like reading the entire post I can tell you it is merely a "glitch" and not an error per say. When clad coins are struck some nickel oozes, for lack of a better word, over the edge and coats the reeding.
I'm thinking of starting a craze on eBay over these just so I can move mine!:p Are you with me?:thumb:

    Happy hunting,

When the blank is punched from the strip the shearing of the metal causesthe lower layer of coppernickel to be "smeared" upwards and in some cases can cover and hide the copper center. (As the punch desends through the strip it smears the top layer down on the edges of the hole left in the strip, and it smears the bottom layer upwards on the edges of the blank. This is important to know because it can be used to authenticate "clipped" clad planchets. On a genuine "clipped" clad planchet the swearing is reversed inside the clip as compared to edge of the coin.)

I read the past thread you suggested and figured it was an anomally worth $.25. Thanks for that info.

As to the eBay thing....someone once said "there's a fool born every minute" and now they all go to eBay. I'm comfortable that with a featured plus listing we could get $4.99 each with $12.99 shipping.:high5:
