If you had a choice of a ms70ASE or a ms65 or better morgan which would you choose and why?I will be going to a local coin show in may and I am planning on saving up till then to possibly look for one or the other.thanks for your input.
I would take the morgan by a huge margin. Older coins, even graded 65 and up, will have a lower pop. In turn making the coin more desirable in the long run. There are just way too many MS70 ASE's out there, it's borderline gimmicky. A higher grade Morgan is a longer term investment, while the ASE is a right now, short term trend coin.
I totally again with kookoox10. I just recently made the personal commitment to not buy anything for investment sake past the mid 1030's. Anything outside of that is completely for collecting/fun sake.
Let me put it to you this way. If you had $500 to spend, would you rather buy one or two "as seen on TV" silver eagles or a high grade Morgan, CC, low mintage piece, low pop, CAC cert? Apples and oranges buddy!
My post was based on someone spending only $75-$100 In that case it would be a choice between a 21 Morgan graded 65 that number in the millions or a couple of raw silver eagles that also number in the millions but sell for only a few dollars over spot. Also i have seen plenty of "as seen on TV" Morgans also.
So your collection features some pretty old pieces then? Why the mid-1030's, in particular, and not the 1040's or 1050's? JK, JK.
NGC Census Silver American Eagles for all dates in MS69 - 4,234,958 Morgan dollars for all dates in MS65 - 360,766 This doesn't include PCGS, but you can probably assume that the numbers are similar. Chris
I would buy a Morgan instead of an ASE. But it also depends on what you collect, if you collect ASEs then you should stick to what you collect. Also many view ASEs as bullion rather than a coin, don't know what you think but these are questions you need to ask yourself.
I would look for a toner PCGS MS65 1885CC, Graded toner in that there are fewer of them. Five years from now the Morgan will be worth more This key coin will continue to go up in value. The ASE are over priced
back when spot silver was $7-8 dollars MS70 ASEs were $90-100. now with spot way up they are still the same price so they have been a loser. check MS65 morgans from a few years ago to now. that tells which is a better investment.
