Hello. I just recieved in change, a 2002 Denver Mint state quarter. The Washington side is completely copper toned and the back seems to be clad. Also, the ridge around the coin seems to be completely copper toned. I scanned this coin on my printer scanner which isn't the greatest quality and really doesn't do this coin justice. I noticed on the scan that one of the I's in Indiana seem very faded to the point where you almost can't see it. The 'Indiana' is slightly faded but the scan kind of exagerates the fading in some of the lettering. From everything I've researched, this coin seems to be missing a clad and I could not find one Indiana state quarter out there that was like this. One expert article I found on the web stated that missing clads in the 2002 state quarters seemed to be fairly rare. Make sure to scroll down with you open the scans with adobe to see the coin in the pic. Any input would greatly be appreciated!
Not the greatest scan, but I blew it up to 400% and it looks like you may have something here. Now, let's hear from some of the pros!
Thanks for taking a look Rick! I know what ya mean about the scan. I did my best with it. Again, the scans don't do this coin justice.. I may have to try to scan again some way or take a good pic.
I also think it may be worth having it authenticated and slabbed by a TPG. If you decide to sell, it will be easier to sell and it will command a higher premium.
I know of a couple of local dealers advertised here in the Michigan area that I believe are licensed through PCGS. So you think it's worth getting graded then? Sorry, I'm a beginer with coin collecting and trying to soak in all of the information on collecting I can.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=missing+layer+quarter&_sacat=524&_odkw=&_osacat=524&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313 These seem to go in around the $100 to $200 range. Unique but not really that uncommon. Unless you plan to sell it, I'd say don't slab it, save your money. I'd say you can likely get about the same amount unslabbed as well. The cost of slabbing is just going to eat into any profits you might potentially make.
TPG is third party grader. The best are, in no particular order, NGC, PCGS and Anacs. The give a numerical grade to your coin, list any variety, and encase the coin in a "slab".
If one of the local coin shops are licensed by PCGS or ANACS, can I have them slab it and certify? Or will they have to send it in too?
The coin shop will send it to the TPG. They may charge you for the service. You can send it yourself if you are a member. I don't think ANACS has a membership requirement, though.
I know the quality of scan isn't the greatest, but are there any opinions on how this coin may grade if graded?
It's circulated, so it's not gonna get anything higher than AU. The pictures are hard to make out with actual quality. Do you plan to sell it or keep it? If you're keeping it, don't waste your money sending it in to get slabbed, you could easily spend what it's actually worth. If you do plan to sell it, 'd say try to sell it without it getting slabbed by a TPG first to see what type of offers you get.
I'm actually thinking about selling it but not sure. Your input sounds totally logical. Thanks! This coin looks pretty neat in hand. I'll have to check a local dealer and see what they think.
