Is it illegal to purchase fake silver dollars from china? Without the COPY stamp?

You have to order at least 10 of them, free shipping at $2.53 each. So $25.30. Really only need one though.

I have no intentions of doing anything bad with it like trying to pass it off as real, but I want to teach people how to tell between real and fake morgan dollars.

I know you can't pass them off as real (that would be illegal) but I don't believe it is illegal to own them.

There are already more than plenty of them around, they are not hard to find. I would urge you to find one of them versus subsidising the scum.
And why do you want one without the copy stamp, specificaly.

Buying them from China that's probably legal. Importing them into this country, well it is legal for the seller because our laws don't apply to him, but it is illegal for you to import the unmarked copy into the US. If you live in Canada they are illegal whether they are marked or not.

Why not just buy authentic Morgans and learn from those? There is no need to support anybody that sells fake coins.

Didn't you read the OP's post? He wants to display a genuine and fake Morgan side by side in order to see the differences. You can't educate yourself in counterfeit detection with only genuine examples.

Have you checked eBay? You can get one for under $2 and the shipping is often free or under $2.

But do it quick... in a few days they will all be gone. If you haven't heard, read more here:

Yup I did. But why buy newly copy coins from someone who just made it in China or so? I'm pretty sure there are places where you can get one or two. Not a bunch of counterfeit coins and give them the money to make more.

Well, I'm sure there is. One other thing... eBay, in their infinite wisdom, has forced replica sellers (once again) to list their "coins" in the genuine category, and delete all reference to authenticity. This is a giant step backwards, dispite all the (unwarranted IMO) applause.

Hard to believe they will be all gone just like that. IMHO eBay will pay more attention to reports and remove them right away, possibly make some scans from time to time to warn sellers who still sell fakes. Most likely they will still be available, if you know how to search for them.

Buy all you want. Nothing illegal about that.

However, you'll run into the roadblock when you try to import them in the U.S., as they are required to be stamped according to H.P.A.

    Good luck!

Yeah, that roadblock is as effective as a piece of kite string trying to stop a semi. It's enforced like the majority of the other six million laws in this land.

This is how I always buy on eBay. Needs a bit of effort, but I got quite large collection by now, expensive coins too!

I bought a LOT of 50 well circulated copy's off of ebay. All mixed Peace dollars, Morgans, trade dollars etc. with no copy stamps. I was actually hoping that maybe some were real because the seller didn't really know what he had. Unfortunately they were all replicas. But I know what the OP is saying about being eduacational pieces. I have a local antique dealer that likes to display them to educate people about buying fakes. I have no intentions of ever trying to sell them because I agree Ikandigit. But atleast now they aren't in the hands of gypsies!

The problem is not that honest people who get counterfeit coins won't sell them to unknown collectors as real coins. The problem is that once you pay money for ANY counterfeit coins you are essentially giving the counterfeiter money. Not only that you are also giving them the incentive to make more, they start thinking people must want these let me make another hundred.

I just received (7/18/2019) a bunch of fake silver morgans that I was going to use for a treasure hunt, with the word "COPY" on them, as shown in the photos. However, the coins do NOT have COPY on them, so whatever import laws there are aren't working very well. The question I have is can I still use them in a treasure hunt or can I get into trouble using these? Thanks!
